I go to 6th form at a school, and i'm 18, so of the legal age to buy alcohol (UKer) I'm going to a house party later on, and in my lunch break I went to buy a bottle of vodka, which was kept with me all afternoon. A teacher noticed a bottle shaped thing sticking out of my bag and searched it, and went ape****. She confiscated it off me, which I think is fair enough, but then she told every member of staff in the teachers' room, threatened to throw me out of 6th form, went to the headmistress who i now have to have a serious meeting with on monday morning, and rang my parents while at work to come and collect me and my bottle. Now bearing in mind that I'm legally allowed to buy the vodka, and it was still sealed so they had zero reason to suspect I had drank from it, did my school overreact, or is it just me?

Tl;dr had some vodka on me at 6th form which i didn't and wasn't planning drink in school, and they went ape**** on me. fair or not?
#2
is alcohol allowed on campus or in class? would you bring a bottle to work?
#3
the rules say we can't drink it, but as far as i'm aware nothing about having it on you
#4
You should have either left it in the car or some place where there would have no possible way to notice the shape.

Slight overreaction.

Are they even allowed to search you at school? Even the cops arent allowed to do that without a warrant.

As for taking alcohol to school....dumb idea.
#7
school mixed with alcohol =bad. what you do with your own time is up to you. but they dont want it there. there was no reason for it. should they freak? prolly. they expect you to act as an adult. if you are caught with a bottle where i work you would be escorted off the property

possession of alcohol at school is, in my experience, not allowed.

what if a 12 year-old finds it, downs it, and gets alcohol poisoning?

If you had it on you and that's ok with the school rules then I really don't see a problem. It doesn't get simpler than that.

a bottle of vodka that cost 12 quid, and you really think i'd let it out of my sight?

Were I went to school, it was like this: If you carried around alcohol to campus, they could confiscate it, though they could also just tell you to leave the campus. The latter was the option they preferred. If you were underage, they'd make a big fuss, tell you're parents, etc, but 18+ was not a real problem.

On a different note - all that didn't keep us from coming to school drunk as f*ck on our last day of school, bringing some crates of beer and sitting around at the door of the principals office, drinking and cheering when one of our teachers came by. And it looked like they found it funny, too. So it wasn't strict after all.
Not like that has anything to do with you ts, I just felt like saying this.

they probably thought you wen to get it for some underrage kid and were gonna give it to him, also theres a law against alcohol in school, so not its not really overreacting, there allowed to confiscate, i think they could even expell you.

the school can't be certain that it will not get out of your sight. if they allow you to bring vodka in, then everyone else will want a piece of the pie.

Police here are allowed to search a person if they have "reasonable cause" to believe they may be carrying something illegal, I think...

To be honest, it probably is an over reaction, but how do they know you weren't going to get drunk on it, or share it with underage people? If you take it in to school, you run the risk of getting caught with it. You probably won't get suspended or anything, so long as you explain yourself properly, but still, think twice next time

if its sealed then I don't see the problem. You obviously weren't drinking it during school. It was rather dumb of you to keep it in your pocket. Don't you have a car or even a locker at school?

it does not matter if you are legally allowed to purchase alcohol, the fact of the matter is that you brought it to a school campus, where alcohol is obviously not allowed and because you are a student on a school campus, you are under the responsibility of the teachers.

Actually, we had something like that happen not far from where I live. Some 11-year old got his hands on a vodka bottle, drank 3/4 of it and died. I know it's wrong, but I can't help it: I think he was a total pussy.

It was against the rules in my 6th form but nobody cared as long as you were over 18... nobody cared if you had booze where i worked after 6th form aswell either

Ouch

Seriously how the hell can you drink 3/4 of vodka at the age of 11? It tastes like kerosene mixed with more kerosene, why on earth would he keep drinking?

It depends where you are. In N.I., teachers aren't even legally allowed to lay a finger on you or any of your personal possesions (ie schoolbag) unless there is extreme need and even then they are allowed only to use reasonable force and are NEVER EVER allowed to search without the pupil's and legal guardian's permission, so unless you said "yeah take a look in bag, see what you find" they would have been breaking the law here. Similar laws in the rest of the U.K. Unless you go to a private school where they can basically do what they want.

It isn't, but that wasn't my intent. I was trying to show the ridiculousness of the situation: someone is asking about something illegal in certain institutions like he never knew it before. I thought this was all common sense, especially in the UK.

Yeah, it depends on the vodka though. Absolut and Finlandia taste good (for vodka, that is). But it all tastes the same when you're 11 and he probably got some of the cheap stuff anyway. I figure he was just trying to look like da big man or something.

When I was 11 and had eaten something nasty once, my parents gave me a little vodka because they KNEW I'd puke like a model who can't see her own bones anymore. Proves to me that alcohol actually does solve problems.

EDIT: I just checked my cupboard and realised that my bottle of Absolut Raspberry is missing. DAMMIT MY VODKA IS GONE.

why didn't you buy it after school had finished surely you could have thought that they might have issues.

Slight overreaction, im sure they arent legally allowed to search you anyways.

When I was in college we sometimes used to get pissed in the fields and eventually in the local pubs when we turned 18 and go back for last lesson of the day....they knew we where drunk but where okay about it most of the time.
