...I got a bottom range P Bass, bought new electronics (SD pickups and new pots) and put a warmoth neck on it? Would this be as good as a Fender Stantard P?

why not just buy a fender p?
I sat next to a nun on the bus once, she said hi

Twitter: @Pikey_P - wise words right there.

You should buy the best you can afford (and a one you like obviously)

Cheap P - £50ish
SD Pickup - £50ish
Rewiring - £70ish
Neck (Jazz) - £120ish
Making your own bass - priceless (forget I said that)
Total £200ish
Fender P over £400

Well?

no most of the wood tone will come from the body

Might as well just get everything from Warmoth, body included.

Still don't think it would be as good as an MIA.

Thats a very good point it would boost the price up to £350ish but it would all be quality made stuff, I dont see how it could be worse than an MIA.

I think it will be just as good and way more personal, as long as he doesn't screw it up.

if you just want a Fender style neck, go to allparts.

Most cheap basses are made alder, I like the bright tone of alder. Unless theres different qualities of the woods themselves.

it would be worse quality wood and probably 3-6 pieces joined together

The plan:
Quarter Pounders - £60
Pots and wiring - £20
Jazz body with P bass routing - £113
Neck (inc fretboard)*- £111
Tuning heads - £50
Total - £350ish

*are warmoth necks already fretted?

yes. the only thing the costs extra is getting it fretless with the lines.
and no pickguard? or metal plate? or finish for that matter?

Pickguard comes with the body, I'll do the finish myself and the metal plate wont cos that much.

what about a bridge? Don't you generally need a bridge for a bass?

Wait, the pickgaurd comes with the body? I've never seen that before...

ok, on the warmoth site, they show the J with P route with a pick guard, you buy the pick guard separately, it doesn't come with it.

Also, do you have experience with finishing guitars? It's not like painting your room.

Ah bridge (facepalm) add £50, but its still better than the cheapest Fender P (disregarding remaining old models which will be gone by the time I get enough money.)

Pickguard is irrelevant :P: Yes I've finished guitars before, I don't use laquer, I use wax and polish and the guitar is still strong today with no blemishes.

if there's no pickguard you gotta get it rear routed. 30 extra bucks USD, about 15 BP if my superaccurate divide by 2 calculations are correct.

pickguards are cheaper. of course, you could always use paper maiche.

about 20'ish, pound is down against the dollar.

I'd get it rear mounted, well if your the same as me and love your bass/ guitars to just have pickups and knobs on the front and have it nice and simple looking.
Black Knight CF-60F Semi-Acoustic.

Black Knight CP200 (Red flamed maple).

Neck-thru 4 string bass.

Acoustic 6 string.

The MIA is going to have the Graphite-reinforced neck, stringthrough body, and proabably a better finish (I don't know what you were planning paint wise).

It's not going to be as good as an MIA, IMO, but it's 80% of the function for like 50% of the cost.
