I heard in some interview that he learned to play by playing along with the radio. I could be wrong but I doubt it, I think Zacky learned the same way. (which is also how I learned )

he did

its call the A minor pentatonic scale.. got a good few albums out of that scale.

and i think its terrible that people at the top of the music business cannot read music.. like in the time of classical music, that was what it was based on, like mozart etc. all the pop acts i doubt can read music..

but meh, life is life.

I think you are right, but his buddy Zakk is a classically trained (although he doesn't play like that) guitar player.

jimmy page was a highly successful and in-demand session musician well before he started led zeppelin. i am positive that he can read music, as could John Paul Jones.

famous players who couldn't read music:

Hendrix
Slash
Clapton

he actually was originally the guitarist of the beatles, but when stew left, he was the only one that would do it, so he is generally reguarded as a bass player, but was a guitarist first....

I read in a biography that Syn attended a music college, studying jazz guitar.

That would lead me to think that he could read music, but I might be mistaken.

Depends on what aspect of pop. If you mean Jonas Brothers pop = No, but session musicians behind solo acts = Probably Yes, because when someone writes music for a song and hires a session musician, they can't sit there and go "Lemme figure out the chords." Time counts in a studio, and reading saves time.

He started off like that, but Syn went to a music college at some point. he is actually quite a theory nerd

I'll read into it, I could have had him confused with Zacky. At least one of them used to sit in their room and just practice to their stereo to learn guitar.
