OK. so i just bought a dunlop gift pack from GC for $20. it came with one set of acoustic and one set of electric strings, a string winder(whoopdee ****in doo), polish cloth, and some spray polish. it also came with a 202 metal slide. now, i mainly bought this kit for the polish cloth and spray and for the strings. but i have been thinking about messing around with a little slide guitar.

ive been playing for about a year now and know a good bit of songs and riffs. now ive NEVER even touched a slide before. i have NO CLUE how to use it. all iknow is that it goes on my finger. but which one! is there a certain techniqe to use? do you have to press dowm on the strings differently? im new to slide guitar and want to learn so can you tell me the basics? thanks in advance

Generally used on the ring finger, its easier than you would think it is to get some cool sounds.

barely press down at all, just let it lay on the strings, be delicate with it, and it doesnt matter what finger, you decide which is most conveniant for the song your playin ect.(preference)

songs for you to learn:

Bron Y aur stomp-led zeppelin
Free bird- lynyrd skynrd

Ring finger or pinkie.

Cant push too hard. Mess around with it. I have one, it sounds cool. Hard to do, though, to get it to sound right.

But when you do it sounds pretty kick ass.

Yeah, its mainly on your ring finger. You just rest it on the strings, dont push it down too hard. Alot of slide guitar is played in open tunings though, so either learn some or just play around with it.

Open Tunings are definately a plus. A few tips: Mute with your picking hand (most important thing to learn), mute with your fret hand index finger behind the slide, keep the slide parallel to the frets, practice vibrato a lot.

That's what he said!

On topic- I actually tend to use it on my middle finger, but maybe I'm just weird. You can use it to get a lot of cool sounds though.

I put it based on what finger it fits on. When I was 12 or 13 or whatever I was, I put the slide on my middle finger so it would fit better. Now the slide I have fits my ring finger better.

Yes.

Slide guitar is a blues thing

Delta blues dudes have been using it since the 1920's and earlier.

yes... if I were you I'd just screw around with it, and maybe look up some slide tabs.

if you want to see what a great slide player can do search for derek trucks, he's very good

an easy song to learn is bad to the bone by george thorogood (or however its spelled)
the tuning is open d

anyway... slides can be fun if you like the sound
