This is the title of a book published by Cassell Illustrated in 2005, and revised for 2008.

Thought it would be useful to list all of the albums it mentions, and see if UG can add to the list to produce a definitive "must-have" music collection

That said, don't take it as a command that you actually must hear these albums while you're here on Earth - that's just the title of the book to make it sell. See it as recommendations of the perceived "best of the best". These are albums that have changed the direction of music.

NOTE : This is not meant to be a complete list of good albums from every genre - that's for the various sub-forums of Bands & Artists to decide. This is for the absolute cream of the crop from each decade. Only add an album if you think it deserves to be ranked as such.

IF YOU SUGGEST AN ALBUM, INCLUDE THE YEAR IT WAS RELEASED

eg. Guns n Roses - Appetite For Destruction (1987)

ANY SUGGESTIONS MUST BE SUPPORTED BY ANOTHER USER WITH A +1 BEFORE MAKING THE LIST

Suggestions can be found in post #245 (p. 7 at 40ppp)

Italics = Added by a UGer

Due to character limits (10,000 per post as it turns out), eponymous albums are just called by the band alone.

eg. Boston's debut, "Boston" is listed as:

o Boston

2000s list edited to match the 2008 edition of the book.

Credit goes to Steve Parker for typing out the 2005 version of the list.

General Editor of the book was Robert Dimery.

If you want to find out more about each of these albums, I suggest that you buy the book (UK , US) or consult Wikipedia.

Downloading the Albums

Most of the albums can be found on BT Junkie.

Transmission for Mac

Audio Quality

In the torrent title, there's usually a mention of the quality of the audio. MP3s generally come in 192kbps, 256kbps or 320kbps - the higher, the better. An MP3 album is generally between 70MB and 120MB in size.

The best quality you'll find is in FLAC files. When converted to WAV by a program like FreeRip for Windows or xACT for Mac, these come out at 1411kbps; which is basically CD quality. However, this means they will be bigger files, so a FLAC album can be anything upwards of 200MB in size.

o NWA – Straight Outta Compton

"a young n!gger named eazy!", NWA f*ckin rule

for 90's thrash i'd definitely go with Suicidal Tendencies - Lights...camera...revolution!

Yay. Venom get some recognition. I may not have read It properly but it seems they swapped Iowa for Slipknot's debut instead. Oh well. It's good to see a wide range of genres represented though.

EDIT: I reckon they should've put The Colour and the Shape instead of the Foo Fighter's debut.

Trust me man, it's Smoke on the Water. Deep Purple only wrote one song.

I don't like most of the 2000 list...
Do we really need someone telling us we MUST appreciate those albums? I understand recommendations, but why make it look like they're absolutely essential?
#17
yes mc solaar !
da vinci claude is an awesome song, even though i dont think its on this album.

Man that's a one bad, bad list. That's pretty much rock, blues, punk n' ****... where are all the metal albums? WHERE ARE ALL OF THE GODDAMN BUCKETHEAD ALBUMS?!
I live near Lake Bodom WORSHIP MEEEEEEE

Quote by Sami Philadelph
LOL, for some reason the impression I get from you is like some wacky Frank Zappa of metal pulling pranks at the Grammys and telling crude jokes during interviews.

It's hype to make the book sell. Here, it's just recommendations. There are millions of albums out there, and this list aims to give a good starting point for the uninitiated.

List some "essential" metal albums, and Buckethead's best; and I'll add them.

I think I've seen this book before - I was disappointed not to see Bruce Springsteen's The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle on it. It's an amazing album that just doesn't seem to be recognised as much as it should...it's better than Born To Run.
#22
indeed great to see kind of blue. Tattoo you by The Stones is missing though
Some of my gear:

Fender American Special Tele
Gibson ES-339

is Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Black Sabbath, Motorhead, Venom, Anthrax, Napalm Death, Sepultra and Pantera not enough for you???
there's a whole lotta decent metal on there
#25
I've been trying to collect all of these, I printed out the list too, but the 00s suck.
Oct. 20th, 2009: New guitar AND front row for Mars Volta.

Is that a ukulele in your pants, or did you just rip ass to the tune of "Aloha Oi"?

I met Sonic Youth on June 30th, and Mars Volta on Oct 20th.

I'm glad to see the list isn't just ALL pop. But I didn't see Cynic's Focus. Whether or not you like metal, I think everyone should hear this album in their lifetime.

you missed acdc black ice

Back in Black shouldn't've even been on there. AC/DC is hardly "must-hear" music.

+1.

I'm glad to see Joan Baez in the list.
sometimes I see us in a cymbal splash or in the sound of a car crash
#29
Some of these aren't great choices IMO. Some of the bands are must listen, but they've picked the wrong album (eg Cypress Hill, Korn, the Streets)

Don't own, but have listened through both. Their stuff is all completely unimaginative and boring, and they've always had obnoxious singers who wrote stupid lyrics.
#33
What about Tool-Aenema or Lateralus?
Any Opeth album
Good list though

But they embodied sex drugs and rock n roll IMO, I mean the gravely singing of bon scott and brian johson may be annoying to some but to me it's f'in great, and how are the songs unimaginative? who else wrote songs like that? plus Angus kicks ass

um practice what you preach by testament peace sells...but who's buyin? by megadeth I didn't see screaming for vengance judas priest, I dunno what else should be on there

Practice What You Preach added.

Peace Sells... is already in there.

British Steel is in there; decide if SFV equals or exceeds it.

Any votes on Mastodon?

Which would you suggest?

Also, votes on an Opeth album or two?

Okay some of the lyrics are odd (Big Balls), but some of their lyrics are really though-provoking like 'Ride On', 'Gimme A Bullet' and 'Gone Shootin''

and Bon Scott was voted 'Best Frontman Ever' in Classic Rock magazine, above Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury etc

For 90's: Wowee Zowee and Brighten the Corners.
Both by Pavement.
