ok well popular songs just need a lyrical hook and a good driving riff. try out simple song structures at first, you know intro verse chorus verse chrous bridge chrous outro sorta thing, but try some prechorus's or muddle it up a bit. next keep a notebook handy, and write down any and i meen any ideas you have, they may turn out usefull. then it just takes practice, meet up with other musicians and jam, somethign decent should emerge from these sessions. its difficult to explain how to write a song because everyone has a different technique, just experiment with diffirent riffs and lyrics etc, eventually something good should come out. unless of course your a fan of rick astley.
