I was thinking of getting steel strings in the near future but I've heard they wear down the frets over time. How long would it take for the frets to wear down enough that it actually affects my playing?

I got the steels today, thanks for the replies.

I got some Rotosound swing 66s, they play really nice and the tone is really clear and good although a little tinny since they're so new.

You know i think the strings will take too long to have an effect on the frets to make a difference to the bass.

Steel strings are tinny by nature. I like my nickels personally.
