well, I went to Long & McQuade yesterday to try some new basses and jam with a few buddies, and one of the neat 5 strings I tried was a black Yamaha.

I'm pretty sure that's the one I played, only it was black.

The built-in thumb-rests on the pickups really helped, I think the pickups were active, had a pretty ballsy tone, sounded pretty good when me and my guitar playing buddy played a few Pantera riffs.

So... anybody else had experience with it? I liked it, from my experience, but I always thought Yamaha to be a beginner instrument maker...

I don't know whether I should get this or a Traben (well, I may/may not even get a Traben)

Yamaha makes all levels of instruments. The bottom-of-the-pile stuff can be sketchy, but the the more expensive ones(that one included) are quite good.
Nope, no sig here.

another question about it, since it's only 34 inches, and I didn't really get a chance to try out the B all that much, but whats the flop like on the B string?

If I dropped it to A will it still work fine?

It would be a bit floppy if you dropped it down to A, so if you do buy it make sure you use thicker strings.

oh alright. what string brand would you recommend?

I tried standard Slinkies the other day, those seem good to play at low actions.

I can't really recommend what strings you should use, just find a brand that you like to use, and get them in a thicker gauge.

When in doubt, ernie ball strings are usually a good place to start, but like fleajr said you have to find your own brand.

I have the 374 (the 4 string version) and its amazing, but if played too loud it can sound terrible, or even if your settings arent particularly good. That said, it is still amazing.
I also have Slinkies on mine and it sounds alot better than any other strings i've tried with it.
Coincidently, I was playing Pantera today with my friend.
