So all of you should know that Rolling Stone had an article on the 100 greatest guitarists a couple of years ago.
This is the list to 25:
1Jimi Hendrix
2 Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band
3 B.B. King
4 Eric Clapton
5 Robert Johnson
6 Chuck Berry
7 Stevie Ray Vaughan
8 Ry Cooder
9 Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin
10 Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones
11Kirk Hammett of Metallica
12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana
13 Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead
14 Jeff Beck
15 Carlos Santana
16 Johnny Ramone of the Ramones
17 Jack White of the White Stripes
18 John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers
19 Richard Thompson
20 James Burton
21 George Harrison
22 Mike Bloomfield
23 Warren Haynes
24 The Edge of U2
25 Freddy King
26 Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave
27 Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits
28 Stephen Stills
29 Ron Asheton of the Stooges
30 Buddy Guy

How much of this do you agree with?

Honestly I can totally see with the first 7 to Stevie Ray Vaughan, but if it has BB King on 3rd, where the hell is Wes Montgomery?
Duane Allman deserves 2nd and Hendrix gets 1st because they just do.
Just because Robert Johnson was extremely influential, he shouldn't be on the list.
I don't know what Kirk Hammet is doing on 11th.
I think Carlos Santana is totally ignored.
Despite him being my no.1 role model as a guitarist, Jimmy Page is a little too high up.
Richie Blackmore should be somewher ein the 20-30s.
#4
Ritchie Blackmore and Tony Iommi should have been higher. Kurt Cobain should have been lower. Satch should have been on.
#5
Well it isn't too ba........Oh Kurt Cobain 12? I'm sorry I'm going to have to say I disagree.

To be honest, I don't think that's suitable as the top, maybe most influential?

EDIT: In my opinion Knopfler should be higher then Cobain and White, wtf!

Jack White is 17th and Frusciante is 18th.

Nuff said.

EDIT and Cobains 12th.

...Jack White, not Frusciante...

I don't agree with the list because I am not on it

EDIT: Nothing about that list is correct.

Richie Blackmore I agree... but Tony Iommi? Seriously?

I don't agree, Johnny Ramone is far to high, as is Cobain. Satch isn't even on there, Vai isn't, Buckethead isn't, Mark Knopfler is to low imo.

Ones I disagreed with being in the top 100, let alone the top 30.

1Jimi Hendrix 2 Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band 3 B.B. King 4 Eric Clapton 5 Robert Johnson 6 Chuck Berry 7 Stevie Ray Vaughan 8 Ry Cooder 9 Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin 10 Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones 11Kirk Hammett of Metallica 12 Kurt Cobain of Nirvana 13 Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead 14 Jeff Beck 15 Carlos Santana 16 Johnny Ramone of the Ramones 17 Jack White of the White Stripes 18 John Frusciante of the Red Hot Chili Peppers 19 Richard Thompson 20 James Burton 21 George Harrison 22 Mike Bloomfield 23 Warren Haynes 24 The Edge of U2 25 Freddy King 26 Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave 27 Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits 28 Stephen Stills 29 Ron Asheton of the Stooges 30 Buddy Guy

Idk what Cobain was doing there, he was not really a great guitarrist, imo.
'Seems like they don't measure it in how good they are at guitar, but as I read earlier, it's probably the influence they brought.
Since everyone says Jimi Hendrix was the most influencial person in rock..

Um... where's Vai?

And how are Hammet and Cobain even on the list?

But it's Rolling Stone - they just went with what is popular.

probably you're right.
It's your opinion at the end.

But Black Sabbath is one of those band that I absolutely hate, from the boring riffs and Ozzy's vocals.

You know what's even better? On the complete list, Eddie Van Halen is I think 76.

I'm guessing that Cobain is there because of his writing.
...I thought this was the greatest guitarist list?

This list is for guitarists who made ground breaking and influential music, not just those who are good at guitar. I think Kerrang! made a list of those.

Billy Joe Armstrong was on the list, Cobain should be at 1st place lmao...
If the standards were that low.

im preety certain its influence rather than talent, in which case its probably got something to do with the number of people they made start guitar and well cobain and hammet would have made alot of people begin to play the guitar.
And on the 7th day God created METAL!

Quote by GoWithTheFlow
this must be most influential, not most talented.

Yeah, that is how it is mainly judged, which is how a lot of the top are decided. If it were only talent, the list would be very different, but influence counts for a lot.

The biggest problem is that they never layed out the criteriea they judged this on. It seems to be a list of the most influential guitarists. Which personally I would rather see than a list of the most technically proficient guitarists.

It's still a bit of bogus list though, all of those things are since there are always going to be differenced of opinion. I for one couldn't care less about Duane Allman or the Allman Brothers band and would never have him anywhere near my personal list of top guitarists.

At the end of the day, who cares what some magazine says, just listen to who you listen to and have your own list. Screw Rolling Stone.
