Do you have guitar recording hardware? (computer input)
Because without it, the software won't matter, the quality will be terrible.

If you want it to sound good, then I can't really recommend you anything decent and free. If you're recording all this kind of stuff, you need to mix it, you need to be able to use VSTs (for drums, for example). You'll need a decent mic or a good virtual amp like Guitar Rig. (Not free).

My advice is get something cheap. I use Cakewalk Sonar, but I've also used Cakewalk Home Studio which is pretty damn cheap and can do basically all the same stuff. There are other alternatives.

Remember you'll also need an input for your guitar, etc. Get a cheap mixer. If you have a decent soundcard you can get an old piece of crap and plug it into that, but chances are you don't so you'd be best getting one with a built in audio interface.

There's probably something free that might get you started for now, ie, you could get by in something like audacity if you're really creative and have like a stand alone drum plugin for your PC but if you're serious about home recording, just front up some cash and buy something.

This guy's totally freaking out when really it's not that urgent a problem.

And TS,
In my opinion, it's so worth to plop down a few bucks and get real quality software than to compromise your recordings.

If you're going to spend time recording all these parts,
do it with a quality system

But a Mac and then Garage Band.

It's as close to free as you can get! (Give or take around $1000))

But seriously, try Audicity.
Tonight I kill your fucking face.
I killed your face.
