Metal is a sub-genre of metalcore since metalcore is more popular therefore better.

There's so much in the realm of awesome metal artwork that there's just too much to name. I don't know many names, but Travis Smith comes to mind, since he's done quite a bit of work for some great bands.

edit: First two guys were meh. Baizley's work was very nice though.

First guy who came to mind.

Granted, I don't know many more people, and none that come to mind, but Baizley is a beast.

Plus, he's a DAMN fine musician.

Yeah, pretty much everything Baizely touches is gold IMO.

Classic stuff right there.
His work oozes with such style.

Whoever does Maiden's artwork.

I don't remember his name at the moment, but did you know that he listens to the Spice Girls when drawing the Maiden album covers?

I remember the days when Riddick was no one except a ****ty bass player in a ****ty mediocre death metal band named Unburied.

Derek Riggs.

Kristian Wåhlin has done some bitchin' artwork. Like this one:

I expected him early on.

Ed Repka, no fuckin' question.

Yeah Ed Repka is the best, by far. His artwork kicks major ass.

I'm only familiar with the guy who did the baroness/darkest hour/pig destroyer/etc album covers. I like his style. But really, metal artists in general I find to be fantastic.

DAMMIT!

How could I forget?

Aaron Turner.

Not only is he one of the masterminds behind ISIS, but he owns Hydra Head records, is the mastermind behind Old Man Gloom, and designs most of his albums covers.

He's very abstract, and loves graphic design.

Not all of these are metal, but these are some of my favorite works.

All of ISIS's albums.

Pelican- "Australasia" (as well as the rest of their LPs)

Rosetta- "The Galilean Satellites"

Torche- "Meanderthal"

Jesu- "Silver" (as well as Conqueror and Lifeline_

5ive- "5ive"

Vince Locke is great, although I am very dissapointed with the Evisceration Plague artwork. Hopefully the artwork inside the cd will be as awesomely gorey as I wanted the cover to be.

Oh and whoever did the artwork for Twilight Of The Thunder God is awesome.
