Best audio listening device? Your ear?

nah ipod has pretty much got it. headphone wise, skullcandies are the way to go unless you want to spend as much money on your headphones as you did your ipod/mp3 player then go with bose.

Ipods are actually kind of crap. They have bad sound quality and no proper EQ. They're over hyped but they are actually really easy to use. I don't have any advice of what to get though but google search best sounding mp3 player or something for some ideas

Depends on how much of an audiophile you are. I'm psuedo-audiophilic and I personally find my iPod to be sufficent thorugh headphones if I change the import settings to 320 kbps, but if you want higher quality then that, i suggest you find one that can play FLAC or WAV.
EDIT: I forgot to mention headphones, DON'T GET BOSE, way overpriced and not that good sounding, I would reccomend Sennheisers, (high quality) Sonys, JBL's or if you want to drop alot for some headphones, get a pair of Klipschs. and unless your spending over $200, besure to get headphones and not earbuds, all the non- top of the line earbuds I've tried have very poor bass responce.

if we could hold the power of a black chick then we could have the loudest device ever! but it would be extremely annoying so it would be a trade off.

If you are looking for serious audio quality a few makers (check out any Cowon PMP, i hear they are really good) support lossless (.flac, .ape, etc).

Also, DON'T get skullcandy. Waste of money. Head on over to HardForum or AVForum for info on what some good cheap ones are. I have a pair of KOSS SB45s (headset so you probably don't want them) - cost me ~45 and are probably the best on the cheap side.

If you are turning into an audiophile, seriously look into lossless formats - only thing better is Super Audio CD and DVD audio.

You might open your search a little more by using the term PMP instead of mp3 player. Don't get anything Bose - over rated and over priced pieces of ****.

skullcandy and iPods.... NO!

the new Sandisk Sansas actually have very good sound quality for the price, and for headphones you can't go wrong with sennhiesers.

You could also look into the Creative players - some of them are supposed to be based off of the X-Fi chips, so they probably have some of the better audio response.

love my Sandisk Sansa MP3 player....featuring 5 band eq. boost the lows, low mids, cut the mids and high mids, and boost the highs...awesome sounds out of those dinky little headphones. i love the eq.

and ive dropped it in a puddle. it still works. dropped it on the tiled floor at school 2 or 3 times.still works. cheaper than an Ipod of the same size.

well don't convert from 320 to lossless - that would be pointless. You need to rip from the ACTUAL CD to get the quality. Or download it. Headphones are major, don't skimp on them. Audiotechnica has some that are really good. AVS forum is going to be a much better guide and anyone here though. So head over that way and see what they have to say.
