I want to, because it's kinda fun, but I can't play cleanly. Any suggestions on how to do so and still look awesome?
#3
I fail at helicoptering while I play, but I can headbang as long as It's nothing too crazy. I don't really have any advice, other than just be confident in your stance and even if you just shake your head up and down slightly you'll look fine.

Practice, just like everything else.

do a tiny bit of it, then when you start feelin comfy with it, then proceed to headbang away. the riffs have to be really simple, that helps a lot to

try playing rhythm and make sure ur headbanging to the tempo of the song.

if you wanna play lead and headbang, swing ur head in a steady pace, try swinging in circles like metallica, dethklok, dragonforce, etc.

peace out, keep rockin

Ok. I assumed practice would be the best method, but I thought that there was a trick to it. Thanks, guys!

step 1. Get cardboard
step 2. Cut cardboard in guitar
step 3. Draw the guitar on guitar shaped cardboard.
step 4. Play and headbang

Practice these steps and you'll be able to do it on a real guitar soon.

Just grow really long hair look down at your frets and bob your head up and down. You hair will bounce high. This gives you the oppurtunity to look at your frets without looking like a buzzard, and you get stage prescence bonus of the head banging. If you need an example, the dethklok video about how the band hates the fans. Thats all I can think of off the top of my head.

Build it up.

Go steadily and play, then keep on going up.

Or work on looking at your guitar and headbanging with the beat.

What is the 'snake'? If it's just up and down, I do both. Or try to.

I headbang without noticing. It's bad when I play slow jazz solos.

Yeah, commonly found in and used by Deathcore bands. With that it is pretty simple because you don't just do that at any point in the song, you hit the "snake" at a breakdown, which would make it easier to do since you aren't hitting very many notes.

What do you mean you can't play cleanly? How freakin' hard are you trying to headbang? I know you can bob your head when you play, it's just that harder.

Oh yeah, and if guitar hero got you into the guitar? you're really playing for the wrong reasons.

there is no wrong reason to play a guitar, except for world enslavement and extermination of certain races, but those guys never make it big anyway.

Exactly, using your neck can mess it up if you do it too much.

TS, I find windmilling easier if you play a galloping rhythm.

yeah i do a windmill during one of my bands songs where we play a bunch of open triplets on the low D

Id recomend practice, but theres a little more to it; Stretch to avoid Whiplash and eat so you don't become fatigued (espechialy if doing it for more than 45 minuets, it can really wear you out)

Learning to play without looking at your fretboard and close your eyes to head bang cause it can be really disorienting. If there's a lot of position shifts you have to learn to peek at the fret board while going nuts!

playing songs should become subconscious with enough practice and time and then headbanging is the focus and everything else is in the back of your head.

You need to be better/more comfortable with guitar before you do it
you shouldn't have to think about trying to do it
