What city in Connecticut are you nearest to?

EDIT: I see you're in Fairfield County. There's a Mesa .50 Cal head on Craigslist: http://newyork.craigslist.org/fct/msg/958835256.html

From there I'd look at an Avatar 2x12 or something of the sort. Also look at Vader, Mesa cabinets.

Get a nice fender amp. You can work off a strong foundation like that to find your tones.

The Fender HRD's overdrive is far from what I'd describe as 'smooth'.

This.

Fender's are notorious for lacking in the OD department.

If you are able to then you should try out some Mesas - a lot of alt. rock bands use Mesas.

After reading I immediately thought of Port City! Check them out. The 12 is about $900 all tube should be loud enough for smaller shows. You could always mic the cab if not. EXCELLENT clean and a nice warm drive imo. Made here in my home state of NC. Check out their reviews and youtube it.

hope this helps!

It is extremely far from it unless you turn it up pretty loud, but even then... I would not recommend using the amp distortion on it unless you can crank it.
