would a sharpie oil based paint marker work for coloring my pickguard? I want something that wont smear or come off very easily if i rub it.

Still wont look as good as actual paint. Itd work, but if you're gonna go buy clear coat, why not just get the paint for plastic instead? It'll look better.

That is, unless you're trying to draw some design on it.

$20 bucks for the solid color spray paint and the clear spray paint. it will look better
