Just a poll that I really wanted to take. 5 years back, no one had a clue about what was Dubai and now, so many Aussies know where Dubai is. It's just weird to see a city which was a desert now become a famous tourist destination.

So, its just a general poll that I wanted to take to find out how many Pit Monkeys know where is Dubai.

Incase you were wondering where was Dubai, its here:
http://maps.google.com.au/maps?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4ADBR_enGB284__285&q=dubai&um=1&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&resnum=1&ct=title

Some info:
http://www.dubai.com
http://www.dubaitourism.ae
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubai

EDIT: All people who live there can please reply to this thread also as Im wondering how many Dubaites are here!

It's the fastest growing city in the world that is currently using 20% of all the construction cranes that exist (last I heard). It looks cool, but it's in the middle of the Middle East. It won't last for 50 years.

Believe me... I used to know SO MANY RANDOM PEOPLE who didnt know where Dubai was. You wouldnt know where was United Arab Emirates but youd probably know Dubai.

Just recently, I told an Aussie I came from UAE and he had no idea where it is but he knew where Dubai was.

Erm, I live there.

It's not all it's hyped up to be, and they're forcing out anyone who doesn't earn 2000pounds a month. Basically, they're making it a place for just the rich and elite.

Just a breeding ground for skyscrapers. And malls. And more skyscrapers. Always trying to make the biggest/largest/grandest everything. Wait till the credit crunch reaches here. Or the oil runs out.
#12
It's kind of sick to be honest, the oil princes building ridiculously over the top towers and artificial islands for the lulz basically, with astronomical expenses for the rich to enjoy, while there are massive amounts of people there living under the poverty threshold.

Sure, the buildings are nice to some, air conditioned streets are a good idea, but what's the point?

That's true. My dad came here during the time GNR had published Appetite For Destruction and Ive been here for my whole life. Dubai is slowly becoming the most bitchiest country in the world, though compared to other countries, its much cheaper.

The most tallest tower was built [Burj Dubai]
The grandest opening of an hotel occured [Atlantis Hotel]
The luxurious 7-star hotel was built [Burj al Arab]
The country with the most amount of man-made islands was built [the Palms and the World]

I wonder what would happen if oil wasnt there.

Yep. I learned about Dubai in a two hour long special on Discovery Channel. I'm a tad confused, though, because the special was about India. I didn't know Dubai was part of the UAE.

I live in a condo.

Dubai's a great place for a holiday. Even now. Just a very very ****ty place to live. Mainly due to the ridiculous number of petty laws.

They've put laws on that it's now pretty much impossible to set up a local show unless you're bringing in some big overseas band. The only shows we can have are small underground ones that are half the time closed down by Police, or ones that can be organised through unis.
#32
I skewed the results in my favour! I put that I live in Dubai, but I actually don't. Therefore, your poll is invalid and presents improper data! Anarchy strikes again!

Petty laws. I've lived in 6 different countries. I've learnt plenty of different cultures, and i respect them. But when a place has a 80-20 Expat-local ratio, you wouldn't expect it to have laws against homosexuals, and system where a murderer gets less time in prison than someone smoking pot.

There's some pretty screwed up laws in Dubai, regardless of how accepting to it's culture you can be.

A girl from my friend moved there, but I know about it because it's so ridiculously rich. They've got tourist destinations, so they're MAKING them! They're literally taking sand and making islands out of it.

I used to live in Dubai, it's a really awesome palce for a visit, just not for living. Now I live in Al-Ain, a city about 90 mins from Dubai. Living is so much better here. =]
But I really miss how I had everything I needed when I lived in Dubai. Now I have to make the usual trips if I wanna get certain things.
Going back to Dubai in about 2 years for university. Gonna be awesome
