I'm looking at the yamaha FG 720 12 and 730, and I'm really kind of stuck. They don't make the 730 in a 12 string, so if I got a 12 string it would have to have NATO sides, which I'm not sure sound great. So the 730 has rosewood sides, but not a 12 string model.

Help!

Is there a large difference between NATO and rosewood?
Will you hear nato that much in a 12 string?

Thank you!

I did some googling and it says that nato is a cheap mahogany replacement from South East Asia. The Yamaha guitars you mentioned, they all have laminated sides so I'm not sure whether there would be much difference in tone given that. I know that if you have solid back and sides that can dramatically alter tone but not sure about laminated.

You can't go wrong with rosewood that's for sure. Have you been able to play both instruments to see which one you like better? If it was me I'd play them both and if I couldn't tell the difference in tone I'd just choose the nicer looking one.

Do you have a 6 string already? If not I would get a 6 string. You will use that a lot more than a 12 string. Yes, 12 strings are really cool, but you will not use it as much as a 6 string, and keeping a 12 string in tune will drive you half way to insanity.
