Those speakers are not that good to be honest. That's a good reason why to get a halfstack. Besides...Imagine carrying that 2x12 combo around! Sheez! I much rather carry a cab and head separately than a pretty fragile piece of equipment that is heavy like fat bastards body bag would be! If 2x12 is what you want then just get teh VK+Framus with vintage 30s 2x12. They are good!

I'd prefer buying my own cab especially with an amp like this that doesn't sound great through those speakers. yeah, you can change out the speakers but why when you can just buy your own cab and get what speakers you want? Less work. I think 4x12's sounds better than 2x12's. It doesn't make it louder but it has more clarity and low end to me. And now I use two 4x12's whole stack with a 6505 and theres a huge difference. The low end is killer when I have to do it through a half stack now it doesn't sound right to me because I'm used to it.

We're about to start getting into half decent venues, mainly pubs but pubs which have music on everynight like the joiners in Southampton (If any of you have heard of it).

The band i'm in plays Heavy rock/Metal but i'd like to be able to get some decent cleans aswell.

For heads I'd look into a Bugera 333 or 6260, but given their quality control problems I cannot in good conscience recommend you buy one over the internet.

No, I think you're probably just getting a half-stack because they look cool. Thats a big no-no. Get a combo, they're normally cheaper, easier to move around, and sometimes sound better.
#19
Double that budget and then start thinking about a halfstack that is worth the money.
#20
^ he's right...I prefer half stacks to 2x12 combos, but with your limited budget I'd look into a combo unless you can find a decent half stack used. Also look into the B52 AT series, the distortion is a bit thin for my taste, at least compared to my 6505, but their cleans are really nice.
#21
Laney GH50L

Also, you should buy a 2X12 speaker cabinet and not a 4X12, it's still a half stack really but lighter and more portable.
#22
a £500 halfstack will be average

a £500 combo will be awesome

randall ftw

or a DSL401
Get off this damn forum and play your damn guitar.

My recommendation, Laney GH50L. Dirt cheap and sounds great for just about anything.

So you're saying that a DSL combo or a Randall RG are better than the Laney GH?

They're likely better than a GH50 with a £100 cab...
The Laney Thread are big and clever. No exceptions.
#26
Try an Orange Tiny Terror and an Orange 2x12. Look on youtube, Rob Chappers does a "metal" demo and you can get some good tones.
Or a B52 AT, or maybe even something else impossible to find in the UK.

but a valve is still the same thing as a tube. and when I say tube I mean an actual tube. I've seen the word "tube" thrown around and used synonymously with "tube amp," and words cannot describe how much it irks me.

I use two 4X12's - it just gives you a fuller sound... and there is no other feeling in the world that compares to standing in front of a cranked stack and feeling the air being pushed when you hit a palm muted power chord.

For £500 you could get a much better sounding combo.

A Bugera 333/333XL/6262 would sound MUCH better than a Valve King Half Stack. In fact, the Bugera's sound better than the Valve Kings full stop, be they combos or stacks. The VK sound weak in comparison.

So, you can either 'look cool' but sound 'meh' with a half stack, or look okay and sound good with a combo. A combo won't detract from your image, but it will add to your sound. A Half stack might add to your image, but at that price it will detract from your tone.

After all, you're a musician. Sound should come first. Image second.

Reliability is a factor aswell though. The Valveking has a 5 year warranty and i haven't heard any stories about them being particularly faulty where as the Bugera's are supposedly hit and miss with reliability.

How are the 6260 and 333 heads?

They're better.

The VK has a much weaker tone overall....at least, in my experience. The Bugera's have much more oomph to them. VK's more suited to plain rock/hard rock.
