Ive been playing for a bit more than a year now and ive been self taught all they way and just finished learning 5 string sweeps. Now im getting pretty bored of playing other peoples things and i want to learn to improvise & compose. Im wondering where do i start? do i learn root notes of scales. Chords, arpeggios, what?

no no no no no

TS, start by learning the notes on the fretboard, then learn about intervals - then you'll be able to move on to themajor scale and actually understand it all.

Jave a read of Josh Urban's Crusade articles in the columns section.

pretty much what seagull said, learn the notes of the fretboard like the back of your hand.

I'd even start with all your major and minor chords aswell, before you get to the scales.

What good are scales if you don't know any chords to play them over
