I've got about $1000 from work and christmas money and whatnot, but i can't decide whether to get an amp or a guitar.

Please use all of your wisdom to lead me down the road to victory.

I am in a Metalcore/Mathcore band, but i plan on doing some jazz/bluesy stuff down the road.

That's a pretty tough call actually.

Amp, you have a couple of decent guitar's already.

But then you have a half decent live rig too..

You have a Marshall Valvestate, is that correct? So the answer is to get a new amp. Those Korean and Mexican Fenders are nice, hybrid Marshalls - not so much.

Please tell us what music you play, so we can suggest something suitable.

EDIT: Also, do you need the amp for home use, band rehearsals, gigging?

a good amp although you could use a metal guitar....... go with the amp

Well like i said in the original post, i play in a metalcore/mathcore band. So i need something with alot of oomph, but that can still get the job done clean.

I will be using it mostly for gigging. The valvestate will do for rehearsal.

I'd look at used Peavey 6505 combos then, they are a little over your budget new, but a used will easily be available under 1000$.

New one:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-6505-212-Combo-2x12-Guitar-Amp?sku=481433

If you have a cab already, you could also just get the head version, which isn't over budget:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Peavey-6505-120W-Guitar-Amp-Head?sku=481431

I think those will suit your needs. It'll take you some time to set the EQ to settings that work well, but that's no different on VTs, so I guess you're used to it anyway.

EDIT: That amp is not so great for jazzy and bluesy stuff though. I think you'll have a hard time finding an amp that does blues and metal well under 1000$, simply because those tones require totally different sounds from an amp. You could go for a good modeling amp like a Line6 Flextone. That one will deliver in the blues and jazz department (and is a great all rounder anyway), but is absolutely inferior to the Peavey for high gain.

Idea: Get the Peavey now and maybe buy a used Vox AD15VT for 100$ used from ebay later for jazz and blues. (unless you need blues and jazz sounds at giggin volumes). Should work for you.

EDIT: See if you can get a used Engl Screamer 50 on ebay. I'd take one over the Peavey for metal any day, and it does bluesy stuff convincingly, too. Only problem is that they're pretty expensive in the USA, so getting a new one is not an option.

Sweet man, thanks.

I think i might pick up the Head version and build a cab. I have 2 10in fender speakers and i can take the 12in. ones out of my marshall.

Thanks for the suggestions!

The amp you have is really nice, so I would buy a new guitar if I was you.

I would get a new guitar. Strats and teles don't really do metalcore/mathcore very well. $1000 isn't going to get you a really good, reliable amp especially for the music you play. And you already have a POD live. I would do clean setting on the amp and shape your tone through the POD, that's what I would do if I was in your position.
