the question is what do you usually do when you get a new guitar BEFORE you play it!

yup.

Inspect it. Check the nut/fret work, make sure the intonation is within reason. Check for scratches, dings, or marks. Make sure all the electronics and hardware works. Ask if the box was damaged when the guitar arrived. Just run your hands over it. Play a few chordes and a short solo on it and inspect it again before taking delivery. I spent about 10 minutes inspecting a purchase before shaking hands on.

Look it over really well. I start by looking it over for scratches, dings, or dents, then i check the frets for sharp edges, and smoothness. I'll then sort of wiggle the hardware to make sure its all securely fastened in place. Then i'll put my ear to the body, in about 5 different places, and strum a chord, i do this to check resonance. Then i plug it up, and i tap the pickups at all of the posts, and i'll roll the knobs a bit.

Then i play like my life depends on it, and if it still impresses me, then i have a maybe.

1. Take pics.
2. Marvel at it.
3. Smell it.(no joke. Factory fresh has a minty smell if it's from Korea or Mexico, and used ones that've broken in smell woody.)
4. Look it over.
5. If it isn't already set up, set it up or get it set up.
6. Tune it
7. Plug into cable plugged into my amp.
8. Turn amp on.
9. Play tetris while the tubes warm up, ultimately spending half an hour doing so in frustration.

Then I begin playing, which stops the relevance to the topic.
