Hey guys i just got an engl 50 watt full tube combo.

Anybody have any experiences with them? I play mostly thrash/heavy metal (megadeth, metallica, slayer, anthrax, testament, exodus, sabbath, maiden, priest) kinda stuff. Got it for 600 with upgraded electro-harmonix preamp tubes. Do you think this amp will suit me well for the price and my playing style?

Yes it will - but why don't you play it and try it out?

600 is a steal - if you're talking USD or CAD.

You just bought it and now you're asking if it'll suit you well and if it was a good deal? What's the point?

Rwalby9 used to own one.

I've had tube amps for a while now, but never actually had any go down on me

I haven't played it, but I have heard good things. It will nail heavy tones, they're essentially made for that.

Where did you get it for $600 US online? That's a pretty good deal.

how would this compare to a 5150? my friend said it would be a lot worse... =(

Well your friend is an idiot.

The ENGL is more versatile, and is up there with the 5150 for metal tones. The ENGL has a different voicing - the gain is a lot tighter.

It isn't better, it's just differently voiced.

I tried it out in store.

Great neck, nice n light, good tuning stability. Overall a good guitar. I didn't but it cause I generally only buy guitars over a grand now.

Amps have a voicing, like they might have a loose or tight bass. Might be very bright or dark. Might have a cutting treble or smooth treble. Sound American or British, modern or vintage. There's a lot of sound characteristics that define the voicing, although based on what speakers you get you can change the voicing quite a bit.

Once you get into these mid range-high end amps, the sound quality will be similar, but which one you get comes down to preference.

Indeed - for instance my VK's clean channel is American voiced with a smooth treble, whereas the distortion is British and leaning towards vintage. I find the amp to be very dark on the whole too.
