I really want to write a love song for my girlfriend, and i want to write something like Muses's "Unintended". I love that song! Anyone got some tips for titles, inspiration, music, and basically writing a good alternative love song?

I have written songs like that. Honestly the lyrics just come to you, or at least they just came to me. Whether you like the group or not check out the song Chasing Cars by Snow Patrol, it's a pretty brilliant love song with excellent lyrics. You can make a love song sound however you want, so focus more on the lyrics. The only type of love song that won't work is one with aggressive music.

hahaha all you guys have definetely got muse down

and ryan, the lyrics should just come to you. if you love her as much as you say you do then I'm sure you can think of plenty of things to say.

The Bible is awesome. Revelation is so badass, I mean, dragons and angels and the devil having an epic battle in the clouds? Badass.

I haven't heard that particular song, but in terms of actual songwriting, muse use a lot of classical/romantic era chord progressions. The king of progressions you would have heard in Beethovens music, Rachmaninov, etc.

But aside from that, don't use lyrics that are too blatant. Use imagery, settings, moments. Be interesting with your chords but remember you can still be simple and interesting.

These days it's pretty hard to pin point "alternative", since everyone is apparently alternative, but basically, just don't spoon feed. The lyrics only have to make sense to you. If they sound cool, and paint a picture, tell a story, then you're set! Good luck.
