Big muff -> Pod -> Amp

Sound alright?

Or is it best to use a pod OR a proper pedal rig?

IMO, you can't beat a proper pedal rig, Amp sims are good especially good if you buy a top grade one, but so far, no sim or digital effects processor has given me the exact sound of certain pedals through my Vox Ac30, but its personal preference i suppose.
