It depends on what kind of music you're into. Are you into hard, in your face rock, or more of a slow, classic rock kind of feel? You don't wanna start off playing songs you don't like just because everyone else plays them. Some suggestions:

Man on the Moon - R.E.M.
Brain Damage / Eclipse - Pink Floyd
Help! - The Beatles
Friend Of The Devil - The Grateful Dead
Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana

These are the first 5 I learned, but like I said it depends on what you want to learn.

You could start him off with some greenday songs, like Warning, Basket Case, American Idiot because they all basically consist of powerchords and simple rhythms. Warning is good because if you play the bassline on guitar it starts off some simple alternate picking. I hope this helped you.
