Oh, hello! I didn't quite see you there. About a year and a half ago, I was lucky enough to come across a 1963 Kay Vanguard. It was, and is, in great shape. I fell in love with these guitars. Now, two days ago, I was lucky enough to see an ad on Craigslist for a "Beat up vintage guitar" for $30. I jumped on that, and wouldn't you know it, it's the one pickup version of the guitar I currently own. Lucky as I am, the electronics don't work, the nut was shattered, I'm missing a bridge, a bridge cover, and a pickguard that isn't broken. I'm going to be fixing it up...on to the pictures.

I didn't get any of it assembled, because my camera was dead, but you'll get the idea if you go to my profile and look at the pics of my other Vanguard.

Yeah the cap is like the size of a bullet. I'm going to resolder the electronics tomorrow. I hope that will do something, as none of the wiring looks wrong, the solder appears to be covered in mold though..ew.

Good buy, and good luck.

You can bet I'll be following this. Any questions, just ask. I love this kinda ****e.

Looks like your lust of the other Kay won't be gone after all.

edit: Btw, that's a '64 Vanguard, not '63. The date is right there on the bottom of the pup.

Dammit. I was sure the '64 model looked much different. Jim, what do you suggest for a nut replacement?

I have a plastic one that'd prolly fit that nicely. I'll give it to you if I can find it. Or you could go to the local shop. That's where I get my nuts. You'll have to sand it down to the proper height, though, mtl.

Sorry for the late reply, btw. I never saw the thread bumped.
#7
Alright I'll probably head out there later today and see if I can save on shipping by getting some pots or something too. And if you can find the nut let me know, I'll gladly pay shipping to grab it as long as you think it's gonna be a good fit.

How high is the fretboard? I'll measure my nut against that height and see if it'll work. I originally got it for my Conrad and it fit like a dream, but the Conrad's fretboard is a little on the thin side.

1/4 inch. The nut slot is skinnyskinnyskinny though.

1/4"? Damn. The nut is skinny as, but not nearly tall enough. Hell, you may not NEED to sand down a nut you gt from the shop. Just take the guitar neck with you and try out a bunch of nuts. That's what I did. Or maybe mod a strat style nut since the slot is so narrow? Idk. ust tossing out ideas.
#11
Yeah this fretboard is a monster, which is funny, being on a neck that only has 19 frets.

Yeah and it was ****ing free.

Awesome? Yes.

And hey, what the hell kind of pickup is this? That sounds like a dumb question, but it seems too small to be a humbucker, And it only has a black and a bare.

It's a single coil. The Hof has singles disguised as mini-buckers. That was done alot in the '60s; humbuckers were rarely used, if at all, on guitars (unless it was a big-name brand, I mean) and single coils had neat-looking cases.

The Hof, Conrad, my Harmonies, the Heit, none of those have plain-jane coil covers.

Also, I got a 'vintage' TOM (minus saddles) for free once from the shop. I was looking for a new bridge for Conrad (yeah, that's its name) and they just gave me that TOM piece.

I need to score a bridge myself. Also, I can't find a diagram for 1 single 1 vol 1 tone anywhere. It's probably extremely simple, but ya know?

I misread and thought the TOM jim mentioned was what you had - my mistake.

Couldn't you use the same manner of grounding for whichever bridge you use though?
#29
Ugh I'm so stupid. All I've ever grounded to are trems. Could you explain how to ground to anything else? Yes I'm that stupid.

Well you could drill a hole underneath the tailpiece to the control cavity, and run a wire through thats touching the tailpiece.

Or drill a hole from the control cavity to where one of the inserts for the TOM goes and run a wire through there.

?

I can't think of a way to do this without the wire showing.

Yeah, I think it would be better to drill from the cavity to where one of the inserts for the TOM is.

Edit: How was it grounded before?

If your going to drill a hole from under the tailpiece, drill straight like 1/16 of an inch then drill at an angle, in the direction of the control cavity.

And make sure your drill chuck (pun intended) will clear the body. Nothing worse than grinding your drill on the edges of cavities and ruining the paint... (yeah, I've done it...)
