Just a general poll that I wanted to take.

I believe its more about Santa nowadays. You dont see anyone going to church nowadays and I think everyone cares about Santa Claus rather than Jesus.

So what do you believe: is Christmas more about Santa or Jesus Christ?

I live in the UK we're a secular country. I don't give a toss what they're calling the break off, I want some time off to see my family, give them great gifts, eat and drink lots and just enjoy the time with them. I don't care what fictitious event the holiday is supposed to be based around.

However, I do think the commercialisation is bad as not everyone can afford it and some people feel like a failure to their kids if they can't afford presents etc.

I'm not a Christian but I love Christmas. You do the math.

ok, not to pick sides but i heard yesterday that people from my local church put on a xmas show for some small children, and to close the event a man proudly said.

"there is no santa, only jesus" to these small children does anyone else find this wrong?
#8
more about family really, I dontt know anyone who celebrates the real meaning/story of christmas.
#9
I'm not religious and I dislike the excessive commercialisation of Christmas as well, because that turns it into a soulless consumer frenzy instead of a time for family and friends, huge amounts of food, Christmas TV and board games.

I believe that Bing Crosby is the spirit of Christmas.

Yes because they are both the same thing. It's like saying "There is no fairies, there are only gnomes"

These days, Santa. Not that I care all that much anyways. I'm a Christian, but again, I don't care either way.

This. Who needs presents when you've got all your family round, you're watching "Only Fools and Horses" on telly after a great meal, and you're all gonna fall asleep at half nine?

Nobody really celebrates CHRISTmas these days. It seems to be mainly revolved around depleting your bank account, pumping money back into the economy so that little spoilt offspring of yours can have "this year's toy", then getting drunk, eating too much and generally being a bit miserable.

I say this as non-christian who does "do" Christmas, albeit grudgingly. Though there are some things I do like about it: Family togetherness (cheesy I know), drinking, presents (both giving and receiving). But everything else about it I'm not really keen on.

I love how the question is phrased, it's basically blessed religion vs horrible commercialism To me it's about the family ... and the food. I build myself up so I can eat a full 4 courses

Santa is made up to keep Capitalism alive. It's fact.

It's the end of the year, and all the old stock gets replaced by new stock anyway, so there's Xmas.

Don't get me wrong, I like the whole x-mas vibe with a tree and eating with my family. But the presents + Santa is obviously because of Money.

People worship money more than they worship god.

But, to be fair, i open my wallet and see my god.

(I don't really believe that money is god, or that god exists...ish. I just said it for effect)

in fact, i'm questioning myself why i have a christmas tree at all....

My family takes me to Church on the 25th but I don't believe Jesus was the son of God, though i'm not ignortant enough to deny his exsistance, a religion was founded in his name afterall. For me it's really about giving and getting things in return, a nice well earned break and feeling happy being at home with your family.
#35
Santa has become more popular, but Jesus is not gone at all. Just because you don't go to church the christmas days, doesn't mean that anybody else does not do it. Many still do.
Christmas has turned to be something you just do for having a cosy time. Not many believe, but still, more and more become believers, and there haven't been such many believers as there is today.
Christmas is alot about santa, but Jesus is not forgotten in general.
#36
Personally, though I am a Christian, I believe it's a good thing that Christmas is moving away from its religious connections. It welcomes non-Christians to join in something that still carries with it Christian morals (Kindness, giving, family).

However, what I don't like is the commercialization of Christmas. It seems like it's no longer about giving and kindness, but about buying as much as you can.

Although I celebrate as Jesus's birth, I bet most people don't even know its true meaning. It's probably celebrated as a time for greed and selfishness and sadness for those who can't afford anything.
