so, a lot of our songs have basslines that are kinda all over the place, not so much so that the songs sound too "busy"... but anyway,
I tune my bass to BEAD and put a capo on 5 so the notes are the same but the frets are closer together so its easier to play the fast parts. the only downside to it is i cant play super high notes and it looks kind of weird on stage.
So, do you guys think this is, in a way, "cheating"?
#2
clever! but hopefully it won't limit your playing, and it might not quite sound the same.

some folk might say you're cheating but whatever gets the notes thru.

Hey its just like drop D on guitar, Drop D makes playing mast runs of power chords faster and serves very little other purpose and its hardly cheating

I have never gotten the hang of using capos on bass myself, but if it works for you and isn't too awkward, then its acceptable. I have one and I've tried messing with it for easy chording on the upper frets--I just can't get a a decent tone using one though.

There is no 'cheating' in music.

If you like it. It works.
I deeply regret the 6661 in my username. Siiiigh. Damn you, 14 year old me, you edgy little bastard.

I've had much more success with using a capo in tapped pieces, than chords, to be fair.

It's actually quite handsome for blues, shredding downtuned riffs and some cool chords, impossible in standard tuning can be reached. e.g :

d ---- 4 ---
a ---- 2 ---
d ---- 1 ---

As long as it works this is an AWSOME idea :3 I used a capo just to play on the same key as my guitarrist, saved some time when playing like i do hehe.

This. Because I personally think that's genius. But I also agree with the people who said it will sound weird and through your intonation off. But hey, if you like it and it helps you play better, why not?

it sounds like a quick way to make a bass short scale.

why not get one of those?

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

clever, but tbh it kinda sounds like a nooby move.

if you like it, your choice, but I'd say get used to playing it normally.
My Rig:

Just go buy a Mustang or something. Much easier.
Telecaster - SG - Jaguar
Princeton Reverb, Extra Reverb
P-Bass - Mustang Bass
Apogee Duet 2 - Ableton Suite

It means you can't turn your nose up at short-scale users though!

It's not cheating, but it's worthwhile getting used to stretching for frets eventually, it's not as hard as it feels like it's gonna be when you start.

also, there's the issue of tension in the strings. they'll be less "harder" to press down on, but it means you compramise tone and can't play other basses etc.

It's a good tuning though - I'm gonna try it I think if i get a 2nd bass.

why not just get a 5-string?

that would be the opposite of what he wants.

What would be cool though, to get a 5-string and THEN capo it. He'd lose no range, just b-d#, but as he doesn't use it anyway..
