Quick question....It is my understanding that harmony for any given chord is a 3rd and 5th up the scale. My question is that is it a 3rd or 5th in the scale you are in, or a 3rd or 5th in the in the chords respective scale

For example:

If your in Emaj

Harmony for Gbm would be A and B or would it be A# and C?

thanks

what?
what are you on about harmony? and there's no Gb in Emaj scale.

are you talking about chords construction?
if so, you should find some lessons here about it

If you are working diatonically (within a key) then move up a 3rd and 5th in the scale you are in.

Sometimes you will harmonize with notes/ chords outside the scale but it's really up to how it sounds as to whether it's right or not.

This.

Lets do it in C major for the sake of simplicity (come on! I'm just out of bed)

C major triad: C E G

D minor triad: D F A

E minor triad: E G B

F major triad: F A C

G major triad: G B D

A minor triad: A C E

B diminished triad: B D F

C major scale: C D E F G A B (C)
