i.e. when a TV is muted in another room, but you hear buzzing. That's the electricity buzzing from what I understand (or the vibrations in the air that it causes, if you want to get technical).

I made this thread because I've always wondered how many people can really hear frequencies that high (if that has anything to do with it). Also, because it always happens when I'm talking on my cell phone and it's distracting (it's right in my ear! ).

Don't worry, as you get older, your range drops and you can't hear it any more.
I play by my own rules. And I have one rule; There are no rules... but if there are, they're there to be broken. Even this one.

Confused? Good.

Uh, well I know that the younger you are, the higher the frequencies you can hear.

That's why those "Mosquito" noises work. They're aimed at teens.

P.S. I'm a womanfolk! : )

I can hear it, I can tell whether a TV is off or just on a black, soundless screen.

Yes it actually is. Turn the TV on a blank channel and sit for 5 minutes. Then turn it off. You will notice the difference.

It works with everything electric.

I could always tell when my friends router was about to give out, cuz its buzz always changed pitch. Funny thing was out of the 5 or so people always in that room, i was the only one that could hear. They were always confused at why five seconds after I said "Well there goes the internet" xbox live would disconnect.

Since I started sound engineering I've kinda trained myself to hear stupid frequencies that most people wouldn't. Hearing this kind of stuff is a bit of a side effect. Another side effect is that my mild tinnitus is now much more pronounced.
