New guitarist here looking for help with first setup. For a few months I've been using a friends very cheap starter guitar/amp set. I'm tired of having to tune it every 15-20 mins of play time. I'd like to go ahead and invest in a good guitar and amp that will allow me to play a decent range of music but keep the total cost under 1k.

I enjoy playing classic rock (Zeppelin, Sabbath), hard blues rock (Black Keys), and alt rock (Soundgarden).

Right now I was planning on purchasing:

Amps:
Peavy Envoy 110 Amp
or
Marshall MG30DFX

Guitar:
Epiphone Limited Edition Les Paul Custom

I would greatly appreciate any feedback and/or suggestions since this is a large investment.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Also, you might want to consider the Peavey Valveking 112. It's a nice, 50 watt tube amp with 2-channels. You may also want to consider the PRS Custom SE.

Both of these together will put you right at $1000.

Take the Peavey. And for the guitar, consider something like an Ibanez SA260FM,its got a single coil, which would really add to the versitality of your tone. Its cheaper, and you could just throw some DiMarzios in it(my opinion:neck hum:Air Norton;Mid single:'58 vintage;Bridge hum:PAF)

Good luck and Merry Christmas to you too!

Thanks again for all the great info and ideas.

I've made a list of guitars and amps to try out at the store today. A little nervous though since I can only play a few riffs and not very well. Might try and talk my guitar teacher into tagging along with me.

I wanted advice on which guitars in the 400-600 range should I avoid at all costs? Primarily the ones that are known for being returned often or just playing like crap. The reason is I see lots of threads here about good guitars to buy but none on which ones to steer away from or even that are laughed at.

In great appreciation,
