Right just need some ideas.

I need a solid gigging guitar that plays well, sounds good and WON'T GO OUT OF TUNE

Budget is limited

I play in a covers band really with a wide range of styles.

Other gear in sig.

Ideas Please.

Cliche, but - Strat.

Preferably a fat strat but mod it for coil split on the humbucker, to get a wider range of tones.
I don't have any long term strat experience, so don't take my word for it, but I have the understanding that strats last for many years.

If you don't want to have to switch guitars, try a MIM HSS Fender strat. Fender's are the epitome of a workhorse IMO(cheap-ish, effective, simple and good), and it's epic win ever since they added coil-tap.

If your fine with switching though, get a G-400; then you have your strat for single-coil songs and the SG for heavier stuff.

Great you've both come to the same conclusions i came to!

How are MIM Fenders for tuning stability?

Nice but i live in the UK

I'd have to look at vintage.

And i find les pauls heavy and cumbersome. I've considered the Vintage Zip series and the Les Paul Junior DC models though.

As long as you rub graphite in the nut and don't abuse the tremolo, it should be fine. I occasionally grab mines tremolo arm and even divebomb it, it used to detune, but after a proper setup and the graphite, it really only detunes when I go crazy on the bridge.

Try a PRS Se custom, not sure how well it stays in tune tho, could replace the tuners with locking ones?
