Nice thanks for answers guys!

I've been checking out a couple of guitars and that ESP Horizon is coming out of it good...

Just that it comes with either Seymoure Duncan pickups or EMG, and who do you guys prefer?

duncans. if you want actives just get the duncan blackouts. they are WAY beter than EMGs.

+1 on the Jackson Soloist

In terms of actives, EMGs don't become great until they're wired with 18v instead of 9v. Otherwise they're very sterile and dry.

Greg what did you send me??

i thought that the duncans were "superior" but some EMGs get a real "grudgy" nice metal sound...

I've played some nice Schecters. My next guitar will probably be a mid ($400-600) level Ibanez. I don't care much for the Dime guitars personally.

Unless you are hellbent on doing whammy divebombs, don't get the floating tremolo. Or if you do, block it off. You'll probably want to do different tunings if playing metal, and the floating trem is a PITA for that. Drop tuning=change in action/string height.

For that price ceiling (hey, do your parents want to adopt a 40 year old?), get a nice guitar with money left over for fx, amp, cab, pa, etc.

IMO, cheap guitars DO sound cheap. High end guitars don't sound much better than the mid level guitars, except they carry the designer price tag. So, unless you are into the collectibility thing...

Nice thanks for reply... helps me quite a lot... by the way i am upgrading my guitar I'm not like getting a new guitar for the first time, I've played for about 4 years now

It's just that i literally have torn my old guitar apart :P

I can't comment on the ESP, but it does look cool. I've
never had a trem though....

You mean a custom-order one-of-a-kind-effing-huge semihollow Les Paul?

Anyway, TS, I'd recommend one of the following;

Ibanez JEM
PRS Standard 22
PRS SC(your call on which)
Fender American Standard HSS strat(spend the other $1,000 on a good amp)
Jackson Adrian Smith Dinky

ESP or LTD 1000 of some sort are great. USA Jacksons are really nice too.

Get a custom shop guitar.

Best answer so far.
For that kind of money you should get a guitar made for you.
And it surprises me no one asked before, but what kind of amp do you have?
#22
Build a warmoth guitar, if you dont get too rediculous you could have a completely custom, just what you want guitar for that price easy, I was thinking about doing it with a much lower budget.

Otherwise, if I had to have a production guitar, an ibanez S series prestige, like this one:
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-S5470-Electric-Guitar?sku=518112

and since im an sg guy myself, they are always nice.

hmmm, new amp would get you much much closer to great tone than a new guitar, at least split the money if you dont want to spend it all...

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

Terribly overpriced sig guitar.

OP, you'd be best off with a custom guitar IMO.

And get a better amp.

please make sure the marshall you're thinking of getting does not say MG on it!!!!

Edit- I noticed you said your guitar is screwed. So for that money you can get both a new guitar AND a new amp that will be good.
