Can this really work? I'm thinking of making an DM album with really sad sounding chord progressions. With emotional solos as well. I'm thinking of mostly using the Major/Minor Scale as this seems to work best for this kind of thing. I already have another guitarist down for it.

Now I'm hoping that if done correctly it'll sound like a more aggressive, technical, DM version of Agalloch. If I do make sad riffs would it still be considered death metal?

i think so. The Black Dahlia Murder's Warborn and To a Breathless Oblivion sound a little heartfelt, but still death metal. Even the chorus to What a Horrible NIght to Have a Curse sounds a little sad. also, with the solos just go with what you feel. bends help for emotion lol.

What I would do is look into good Doom Metal bands and songs, and take chord progressions and riffs ideas from there, and make them more into what you like about Death Metal.

Swallow the Sun is a good one, especially Plague of Butterflies.

they call that melodic death metal

Not exactly

I want a more brutal sound too it. MeloDM sounds too happy at times.

If I'm gonna make MDM I might as well just make metalcore then

Black Dahlia Murder has two very sad songs. Nocturnal, and Built for Sin especially. The tremolo picking part in Built sounds very tragic and heartfelt.

Also, the intro to Cold Hate Warm Blood by Cryptopsy

The intro to this song, called Pressure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzTmh6KGG94 As well as the riff that comes up at 2:34, when the girl singer comes in.

What? I can't believe you just said that...

A lot of diminished chords and minor chords sound really sad. If you want sad-ish riffs with a bit more punch to them then regular doom metal bands, check out Moonspell and Amorphis' older material.

Indeed, death/doom is what you're looking at.

Though I can't see how you'd make it "technical", you tend to lose the subtleties of the emotions you're trying to convey as soon as you complicate the music. Sorrowful, melancholy music is all about simple but effective riffs.

Listen to Autopsy, and you will be saddened by the fact that no-one writes death metal like that anymore.

I want to try that while playing the opening riff to "Tempting Time".

0-0-0-13-0-0-0-0-13 or something like that alalalala but It;s so heavy and off time and awesome and you could not f**k anyone to it.

Ive never heard something like that in your run-of-the-mill "brutal" death metal, but I hear it quite a bit in Melodeath. Off the top of my head, Fate of Norns and Under the Northern Star sounds kinda sad.

+1
Although pretty much anything by Swallow the Sun would work. Try Doomed to Walk The Earth and The Justice of Suffering, in addition to Plague of Butterflies.

The Morning Never Came is pretty much the best Swallow the Sun song ever.
