The BOSS DS-1 is the standard, usually. Used by pros and amateurs alike, it costs about $40 at pretty much any retailer

were gonna need your playing styles as well as a more specific budget. the DS-1 though, as tickler said, is the standard "cheap distortion", and its not bad for getting that 90's "grunge" sound. there are some other companies like digitech, danelectro, that make cheap distortions. ibanez also has a line of cheap pedals.
