Things are looking really good for the Swedish Pirate Party. Running up to the 2009 European Parliament elections more than half of all Swedish men under 30 are considering voting for them. Thanks to the Internet, its membership has grown 50% during the last quarter, surpassing that of the well established Green Party.

When the Swedish Pirate Party was launched three years ago, the majority of the mainstream press viewed them with skepticism, with some simply laughing them away. Times have changed though. As the government works to introduce harsher copyright laws and others that threaten the privacy of Sweden’s citizens, the party is growing stronger and stronger.

Would you vote for them? Or be a member? Or are you a member?

I think it's quite amusing that a political party is founded on the central notion of breaking a particular law.

If they were here I'd seriously consider voting for them. At least they're amusing.

I don;t want any of my countries current politicians to run the country. Even within the party I work for. I've started to decide which TD in my party I'd most like to see as PM based on how funny their antics are multiplied by how much drink they buy me in the Dail bar.
It's as good a way as any.

I'd vote for them. It goes way beyond just pirating stuff, it's the implications. Pirates can't be caught unless their privacy is invaded. So what's going to develop over the next few years? Are governments just going to say, "oh well, I guess we just have to let them keep stealing!," or are they going to decide to just have a look on every citizen's PC without permission? That's wrong.

I find it quite disturbing that a political party that could be in control of an entire country was formed to remove one law. Does the parties political agenda actually go further than privacy and copyright laws and if so are they actually going to be beneficial?

But as a side note my view on privacy from government officials is that the only people who want it are people who have somthign to hide...

Good thing it's about the rights of Americans
I stand by what I said though, why worry about who sees what you have unless you have somthing to hide? Guess thats more of a moral view or somthing like that though.

Because your personal life is none of their business. The FBI spent years trying to discredit MLK using stuff from his personal life (affairs etc) which pout huge stress on the man, cumulating in them sending him tapes and a letter telling him to kill himself or they'd release them and cause him huge embarrassment.
None of that stuff made any difference to the work he was doing, but it still would have been devastating. All it takes is a government official to take a dislike to you and what you do for a living/ in your spare time (a politically active person would be ****ed) and threaten to release details of the midget porn you've been watching.

Yeah it's a moral view, it's a basic human write to have privacy. Not to mention the thought of a government that trusts absolutely nobody. That's when it becomes a dictatorship. Trust is a basic requirement for civilization. Yes it's good to be able to stop crime before it happens, but in the end it's the criminal that does the wrong doing and is responsible for what his actions create. There has to be some point at which trust comes into play. If that disappears you will see just how pure and blameless a police state is.

At first they seems to be a one question party, but if you read more you'll see that they are against some integrity-violating laws that are being passed in Sweden at the moment. They are the only political party that firmly is against all sorts of goverment surveillance of the internet.

Also recently there was two different alliances formed in Swedish politics, an older one between the right parties and a newer one between the left parties. This has left us with basically a two-party system which I am strongly against. And the pirate party seems in this moment to be the only party on the outside which could have a serious chance of doing something good. Other than that, it would be the nationalistic party SVerigedemokraterna, but I don't agree with their politics.

The elections will be in two years, and I could definitely see myself voting for the Pirate party.

That'll be the first election I'll ever get to vote in. I don't really know anything about the pirate party, though.

They want everything about piracy (the sharing bit, not hijacking boats) to be leagal. They got no other standpoint. They avoid questions like "Are you right or left wing?", since they would loose half of their members if they choose any side. They're a joke. But I'd vote for them in the next election if they would ware pirate outfits. That would be awsome.
