I was watching Echoes (Live at Pompeii,) and noticed that Roger Waters was picking his bass just about at the bridge. This struck me as odd, and made me wonder where others play.
When playing a lead line, I'm usually in between the first two pickups, but if I'm doing some rhythm work, I'll find myself strumming at about the 14th fret.

Its not odd. it gives you different sounds depending on where you pick/strum.

But I usually pick/strum between the first two pick ups.

I realize that, but watching more videos leads me to believe that Waters plays there because that's where his hand naturally falls. I don't strum around the 14th because I like the tone, that's just what feels natural to me.

If I'm playing a melody line or riff, I'll have my hand on the bridge and pick around the middle pickup on my Strat.

If I'm playing chords, I'll strum between the neck and mid pickups.

If I'm soloing, I'll usually pick anywhere between the 19th fret and mid pickup, depending on the tone I want to achieve.

Most pick bassists pick at the bridge. I don't know about them, but I do it because that's where the string isn't going to vibrate as much, giving me more control, and because I can rest my hand on the bridge - keeping your hand in the air is a bitch.

On a Strat I usually pick between the middle and neck pickup unless I'm palm muting.
Did you know the odds of a Vault-Tec shelter failing are 1,763,497 to 1?
