well consider it this way : if they don't have it and it's sold out, then you save yourself 300 bucks, and a bunch of saps wasted there money on that junk. Seriously, for that price you can get a nice squier J or an Ibanez

get a black Squier or Ibanez, it is not anywhere near what Sixx actually plays.

and the shape is quite flawed.

I'm not going to sugarcoat it. That bass sucks.

Muddy pickups.
Horrible Neckdive.
Ridiculous bang-for-buck ratio.
It only has a on/off switch.
The Body meet the neck at 17th fret.
No tone control.
It weighs a ton.

wait...you got inspired from nikki sixx ?

on topic : looks aren't everything, for one, since the t-bird is shaped like that, if you try to put your arm down, the bass will fall neck first into the ground, so your arm will be a prisoner of torture, if that makes any sense. As a matter of fact, the nikki six bird is 400 dollars! Here is something you can get for the same price

http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/RockBass-by-Warwick-Corvette-Basic-Bass?sku=519085

and you will still have enough money to get a fleshlight or a whopper or something....

Well, the Epi's aren't really that popular around here at all, may it be signature or standard. And imo, it's for a good reason, although I admit I really like the looks of them. I still recommend you to have a look for something other than the Thunderbird.

One of the few Thunderbird shaped basses without a load of design flaws (making them love or hate basses) is the Spector, but that runs in at several grand.

The others weren't joking. Learning on a Squier or an Ibanez will be much easier and lead to better technique, as you won't have to adapt your technique to support the neck.

You seem quite determined, but PLEASE try one with a strap and compare how it feels with another bass like a Squier P BEFORE you buy.

If you still really like the shape and feel then go for it, but understand that a there a lot of people here who have been in a similar situation and are advising you to try alternatives based on their experience.

When you're learning you don't want to make things unnecessarily difficult for yourself, and a bass like the thunderbird can do that.
#17
i'm gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that you're not retarded and as such don't want to be treated like a retard, so do yourself a favour and jump off the overpriced god awful signature bass train.

If you want the look of a thunderbird then do yourself a huge favour and buy a Tokai, they are built more like the gibson equivalent in terms of general construction (they have a set neck as opposed to a poorly fashioned bolt on system) and in quality (tokai have been known to rival gibson in terms of quality) and they have one less major design flaw, they don't have the suicicidal bridge. the tokai beidge is screw tightly into the body and will never jump off the body for no reason at all. and best of all the price Tokai T-Birds cost roughly £300. Epiphone charge £200 for a cheaply made piss poor equivalent and £266 for an even worse model with lets be honest a rather talentless drug addict's name on the headstock, Gibson charge over £1000 for what is basically the tokai but made of mahogany

In short if you want a thunderbird buy a tokai, they are the only half decent well priced thunderbirds made

He's just starting...i don't know that building is ideal right now, although it would be a great way to familiarize one's self with the bass.

If you're dead set on buying a thunderbird, by all means, do so, but NOT before trying it AND other basses (especially ones within the same price range) and knowing for a fact that it is the bass for you - don't be afraid to forgo aesthetics for functionality, especially when starting out. Who knows? If it plays well enough, a new bass shape may well become lovely in your eyes. best of luck.

go to guitar center, local music store- whatever, get yourself a few basses. have the guy play a few basses in random order from your price range with you not seeing what he's doing, without listening. pick out the 2-3 that sound best to you. feel their necks, look at them, then decide.

Ibanez = **** not a company i will ever like in any way they lack to much
squire = ****tier. crappy parts low quality and not very tough

Epiphone thunderbirds. heavier than hell headstock falls to the ground the blackbird on its own is made for one sound and one sound only and that's nikki sixxes deep growl. it looks bad ass my favorite shape by far. the neck is my favorite neck ever thin and fast for a bass. granted the 3 pt. bridge isnt the best but if u no what ur doing u wont have problems. and theres an upgrade made by hipshot to if ur really worried. but try out regular epiphone thunderbirds they got the variety that the black bird doesnt have and the goth is nearly identicle. and in many ways the bolt on neck is better then the set and thru kinds. u loose some sustain but sustain bass a loss u can deal with but u cant tweak set neck and neck thru if heres a problem. look at the goth and black bird and relocate the strap button im sure u can find good instructions for that and itll help with the falling neck.

To be honest with you, I'm going to question that you've had experience with Ibanez's or Fenders for that matter. You want a thin fast neck? J basses and nearly every Ibanez made fit your bill. Growl? P Bass. Really the only thing going for the Tbird at the moment is looks, but if you are willing to end up with seriously F**ked wrists from holding up that heavy lump of **** for so long as opposed to just Rocking it out on a P-Bass or EBMM Stingray (Olp for the cheaper variety) I seriously question your mental health. Oh, and just for the record, Classic Vibe and Vintage Modified Basses (Made by SQUIER) totally rape the Thunderbird

But to the TS, if you MUST get a Thunderbird, make it Tokai or at least the Goth Thunderbird, none of this on/off switch bollocks.

You can get much higher quality basses for the same price. If you're very concerned with appearances, perhaps take a look at some BC Rich Basses and give them a trial run.

I really liked the Thunderbird before I picked it up at my local music store. It weighs a ton, neckdives, and doesn't sound all that impressive. I was tempted to whip out the following and blast the price tag to shreds:

That's just moronic. It's like saying it doesn't matter if a Ferrari doesn't come with a CD player but it's easy to put it yourself, you shouldn't to do that when all cars of the same price and cheaper come with the CD player.

BTW Try the Squier VM 70s J-Bass, excellent bang for the buck.

it WOULD be foolish to try to build your first bass without any knowledge of luthering woodwork.

i was just offering any would be thunderbird players way round the very obvious problems of the real thing.

though i'm not sure if a warmouth neck would make that body dive or not
