! EDITED !

I bought an original Ibanez RG550 from 1987 (the guitar is older than me) this august. My idea was to repaint it and switch out the pups.
As of now I have installed a Steve's Special and an Air Norton. The tone is really sick and 1 000 times better than before. I have also repainted the old pickguard in white as well as exchanging the knobs for white ones (so that they match the pickguard). The result is quite pleasing. My RG is already looking more sexalicious than ever. The clearcoat was a bit of a hassle. I repainted that piece of **** in my bathroom, so all sorts of fibres stuck to it. I managed to remove the biggest particles, but some tiny ones still remain. I will probably grind the clear away when the time comes to paint the body and the re-apply it as it well. Just need to find somewhere good where I can do it.

Checklist:

New pickups - Finished
Black to white plastic details - Finished
Do something cool with the truss rod cover - In progress
Refretting - In progress
Repaint the body (blue/turqoise metallic/candy) - In progress

Plenty left to do.

I will post pictures and info as the customization progresses (unless this thred gets shut down).

After (phase one):

P.S. I will upload some hi-res pics on sunday or monday and remove that ****ty cell pic.

seems like a good idea.

it does suck that one cannot try pickups out before you but it.

Nice RG, I want a 550 so bad!
Heres a vid of a guy with a 470, he has a Paf pro in the bridge and a Tonezone in the neck.
It sounds pretty sweet.

How unconventional of him. I thought it was gonna' sound crap, but it actually kicked ass. Well, I still haven't decided. I would like some more feedback and input from people around here. Maybe this isn't as exciting as putting an EMG into a Gibson or Epiphone LP (since those threads get like 500 responses in 5 minutes)?

BTW, do you actually need all those specialist tools if you're going to re-fret a guitar, or would a plastic-tipped hammer do?

Tone Zone/Air Norton sounds about right for what you want, I wouldn't go for the Air Norton in the middle at all though....Blue Velvet or FS2 would be better choices.
Actually called Mark!

I went a bit extreme with mine...
But I wanted something that hasn't been done to an Ibanez before so heres what I came up with it...

Beveled and stained edges

Stained body with ghosted flames and single emg 81

Rosewood trim and close up of flames

And this is what she looked like when I got her...

Sweet guitar! I was actually considering at stained paintjob, but I reckon the pickguard would mess upp the overall appearance. As of now, I'm really into the idea of a lazer blue/pearl blue guitar with white pups and pickguard. The major problem is my total lack of experience in painting guitars. Maybe a pearl is way out of my skill level? A solid darkblue, purple or red seems to be the most realistic choice for me. I need to decide about that real soon as well since I'm going to order the pups in january, and I don't know if I'm going with white, cream or black. =/

Seriously cool colour. But I'm fairly sure it contains flakes or something like that. If you want to keep the effect, you have to put the color on well the first time. I will most certainly sand the **** out of it after every 3 coats or so.

Lol I hear ya, but they can look nice with the right body color. I've seen a few I couldnt even tell had pickguards till they showed them at an angle.

Ah, pardon my ignorance. Didn't even think about that. My painting experience begins and ends with Warhammer figurines. I really have to try that on a slab of wood. Thank you!

But my guitar has a fair bit of routing and some wiring undernerneath that pickguard which I would like to keep hidden.

I ordered an f-spaced Steve's Special and a normal spaced Air Norton (both in white). Set me back €167 (incl. shipping) which my converter tells me equals $225 roughly. Probably expensive by US standards, but I believe I got away cheap by Swedish standards. If I bought them in-store, the price would've probably been closer to $300. Anyway, they should arrive this week sometime if nothing goes wrong. Just need to get myself a new white cover for my stock single coil. I will post pictures when everything is installed.

Some progress at last! I started respraying the pickguard and the knobs yesterday in white. It's not that I'm too cheap to buy new parts, I just find joy in making things myself. All the plastic should be done today or tomorrow. I just have to sand my pickguard slightly and then clear it. I'm sorry for the exceptionally poor quality, but I only had my phone.

And tomorrow these are going to be installed:
