i've always found pop to be harder to play than metal... especially shred metal... it's just really fast tremolo picking and the occasional palm mute... and the only chords you have to worry about are power chords...

Is the tuner on?
If so, turn it off and call me in the morning.

Dodgy wiring inside guitar/cable
Your jack input is bollocksed...
You're stupid and you forgot to turn the power plug on, and forgot you dont have batteries in your tuner.

Either one.

bring it to a decent guitar shop. They will check the wiring of your guitar for free. If it all looks good, then it's your cable. I recommend getting a good one with a lifetime warranty (fulltone, monster, etc.). It seems like a lot of money to spend, but it will be worth it in the long run.
