Even though my Vox ADVTXL is made for hard-rock/metal, it has bad distortion. So, I plan on buying a distortion pedal. Any good ones you know of?

I'm trying to keep my budget under $100, but I will take any recommendations over $100.

Try the Tube Screamer. I personally think it's worth a try for pretty much any rock/heavy music set up. Outside of that, maybe the Big Muff? Or also there's the Boss OS-2 Overdrive/Distortion pedal which I've been able to get some good sounds out of with a lot of tweaking.
We're only strays.

Is your amp tube? a TS will be useless if it's SS. Personally I did not like the Big Muff, too much fuzz and not enough dist. for my tastes.

I've heard good things about the Metal Muff. Maybe and MXR distortion+ or Distortion III.

I just got the Proco Rat and it's great, very versatile. Can get a big muff smooth fuzz sound with distortion and filter turned up and more subtle overdrive with it turned down. Distortion sounds crisp and not too aggressive, highly reccomend it. I think they're about $85US?

Get a new amp, no pedal will save the XL's bad tone.

But if you insist, I'd recommend an EHX metal muff, Rocktron Silver Dragon or Digitech Metal Master(I got a pretty heavy tone from it)

I just got the XL, so new amp is out of the question.

I'd go with the Boss DS-1 pedal. It's cheap, simple, and still has amazing sound.

Boss MLl-2

Zakk Wylde uses a Boss SD-1. Malmsteen uses some sort of DOD overdrive. Classic metal drive is preamp tubes being floored, overdrives can do metal surprisingly well(Hell, with the bridge pickup on my PRS copy, preamp floored at 12, I can get decent Iommi tone from a freaking Blues Jr.). For modern tones though, take a look at a Metal Muff, Boss MT-2, possibly even a normal Muff, maybe a Vox Satchurator, and a ProCo RAT.
