I can't figure out how he does it...but he does it in some form almost every time he plays Tin Pan Alley...

I NEED to learn how it works...

it's sounds like a really common blues lick...just played really fast, so he's practically sweep picking. god, i never realized really how fast he can play, but he has a lot of speed.

it's right in between a sweep and a rake.

Hmm. Sounds kinda like a sweep but he's raking the strings. Not sure.

So does anyone have some more expert opinion on how this particular effect is created? I can't seem to find a good vid, or even lesson that explains it.

You know what, because it's new year's thingy I took the time to transcribe it.

e|--------(7)------------|
B|-----------(7)---------|
G|---(7)h9------(9)p7----|
D|(9)----------------(9)-|
A|-----------------------|
E|-----------------------|
   d------>u--------->d

the -------> is a sweep.

What he does is he sweeps but in between the sweeped picked notes he pulls of.

The notes you pick in the sweep are in the brackets; ( )

This is not exactly the same, he plays around with the notes and the speed of the rakes.

Another 2 patterns:

e|-----------(7)---------------|-----------(7)--------------|
B|--------------(10)h7---------|--------(7)---(10)p7--------|
G|---(7)h9h10---------(9)p7----|---(7)h9------------(9)p7---|
D|(9)-----------------------(9)|(9)---------------------(9)-|
A|-----------------------------|----------------------------|
E|-----------------------------|----------------------------|
   d--------->u------------->d   d--------->u----------->d

Thank you!!

I can sweep this pattern, but I just couldn't seem to get the sound right.

I've been listening to him since I was a kid (I'm 27 now) and I have NEVER gotten sick of this song. NEVER. Every time I listen to Stevie I hear something new.
