I have a lot of family in Canada. I might be going there soon.
Due to the fact im bored and im not on broadband on this comp (hence cant download any music or watch porn) i decided to read into Canadian culture and to find it isnt very straight forward.

Just out of curiosity dyou think Canada should break its links with the Monarchy and become a republic like Germany or Ireland or should it maintain their role as a dominion?

What relationship do modern Canadians have with the head of their state? And would they be better culturally if they had an elected head of state?

We will never become part of the US. I un-vote for that. Our monarchical ties are pretty loose - as stated, we'd have somebody else on our coins.

None of these would solve culture problems. I agree with the Queen out of the portrait, not with merging with the USA. We are very different and do not think the same way. Culture and identity reside in families. The government has nothing to do with that. Nobody even in our own country seems to understand that.

I dont see it shouldnt work.

But if it has no purpose or role to play in Canadian culture, why not try to revive an interest in identity? And also the important French community feel isolated with that allegiance.

What benefit would that have in trying invoke a spirit in a nation and inspire art/expression if the country is a dominion to a kingdom that the people feel is completely alien to them.
It is not like in Britain where the plays monarchy plays an integral role in the culture and confidence of the people.

But in such a multicultural society shouldnt that diversity be MORE of a reason to try and reflect that identity in the politics and state?

I think getting rid of the queen wouldn't be worth the fuss, the prime minister is the actual head of state, the queen just is on paper, so I'd say we do have an elected head of state, even though with a minority he doesn't have that much power after all. Here in Quebec we do pretty much whatever we want anyway so it wouldn't really affect me either way.

On a global scale the UK isn't that much stronger than us anyway so it's not really a problem like it was a couple hundred years ago, by getting rid of the queen we're not throwing off the shackles of oppression or anything like that. It's the same reason they still have the queen over there, no reason to start a ruckus over a mere matter of principal. If somewhere down the line a king/queen gains power that actually wants to take an active role in governing they'll get rid of them pretty quickly and the problem will be solved, but until then it doesn't make a difference.

I agree, but is it not these principles and values that define a people?

An actual Canadian as a representative abroad. Modern Canadian culture is far from what the Queen represents. Canada represents a fusion of diverse peoples Natives, Brits, French, Russian, Irish etc and having a symbol of Britain as the figurehead of these different people isnt correct

Wouldnt we need a change in the parliamentary system without the monarch/governor general? At the moment they are the head of state, and it is up to the governor general to dissolve parliament/call elections/etc.

all options are idiotic and uninformed, although i realize you said "the most" beneficial.

at the moment, we need a proper left wing government like our country is supposed to have... depose that ignorant redneck in Ontario right now.

of course, it's all so subjective it makes me sick.
