Some of you might remember a thread like this that was done some time ago. well, here's another one
of course, this is just for fun, this isn't to prove anything or something.

let the games begin

i'll make a graph of the answers to show the results after i have enough answers.

it works like this:
there are 6 soundclips of 3 different amps (one clean, one dirty for each amp), you listen and decide wheter you think it's SS or tube. then you fill this in and post it:

the first amp is: SS- tube

the second amp is: SS-tube

the third amp is: SS-tube

note: SS doesn't neccesarily mean analog solid state, like a JC-120 but it can also be a digital modeler.

Theres only dirty for amp 1...

Amp 1 dirty sounds like a tube to me, amp 2 is SS, or i'm a monkey's uncle. Amp 3 is SS i think as well.

Tranny= transistor= solid state (if i'm not mistaken) I refuse to shorten solid state to the "initials" out of principal and for ampp thre: I'll go for modeller then
#11
You guys might as well say the worst sounding ones are tube, since that's the direction of every single other thread of this kind.

actually, I didn't try to do that. i just looked for some clips of (a) tube amp(s) and SS, i didn't try to make the SS sound better than the tube amp(s).

ok then, the results !

tem-tem-tem-te te ti-ta-te-teeeeeeem !

amp 1 was a digital solid state: a Hughes and Kettner Zentera. dirty was a 50watt plexi simulation and clean was a fender blackface emulation.
amp 2 was a tube amp: a '65 Princeton Reverb reissue.
amp 3 was an analog solid state: a Pritchard Black Dagger.

all of the clips were taken from the amp maker's site.

The Zentera and Pritchard are both awesome. People underestimate Solid Snake amps.

true. and the Zentera sounds even better in real life. a lot better.
#29
Honestly the main issue with these is your not playing the same thing and there are effects involved. Do another one playing the same riffs for each amp with single sustained note plucks and chords with no effects. And lets see if everyone has the same results...
#32
I was dead sure that the first clip was a tube amp. Sounded really good. But I guess it's expensive even though it's SS. :/

well I got 2 out of 3 not bad for a beginner. Guess that shows the high end SS are very good to say the least. But it does comfirm alot of what I thought, majority here have tin ears and as long as an amp is reliable go with what sounds go to you and forget 90% of the people recomend. They're to full of themselves ruining thier eardrums while "shredding".

hooooly crap.... that was awesome. i honestly think that my next amp will be a modeler. because of tests like this. i mean, seriously, if i buy my next amp (which will be an expensive one) in 5 years, then modeling technology then should be pretty amazing stuff.

The first one is a Hughes and Kettner...not sure which...

Second one is definitely Princeton Reverb.

Third one, not sure, but it's solid state.

I think this is unfair because you compared two SS amps that are more expensive than $1800 and compare it to a mediocre reissue. Not to say that this doesn't shed some light on the tube vs SS issue, but not many people have the cash to get one of those high end SS amps.

Amp 1: Solid State
Amp 2: Solid State
Amp 3: Tube. The backing track makes me think otherwise, though...

EDIT: just saw the results. I got the first one right. I feel bad about myself nao
