Would a Zakk Wylde OD push a Orange Crush 30R(SS) into heavy metal territory? Because my mate is selling one.

Thanks!
(Don't tell me to get a new amp)

Just get a Boss SD-1. That's what the man uses himself, and it's half the price.

^^ @ WTF!!is a tab for the +1

@Bucketmark; Hmm...in that case, you'll probably want something heavier. Try maybe a Vox Satchurator, possibly an EHX Big Muff Pi, a Boss MT-2 or a ProCo RAT2.

Well, if you can find a little more cash, a Vox Satchurator should work well.

Edit; missed the "pay double" thing. try the MT-2. If you like it, screw what people say, get it.

Hmm...from that lot, I'd try the DS-1, MT-2, the black-label HM-2 and the Ibanez PL5, and pick the one you like the most of them.

As a general rule-of-thumb, OD =/= good on solid-state, so I'd try for distortion, but it may work. Try it first to be sure though.

^The only difference between an OD and distortion pedal is the type of clipping, I swear 99% of this forum doesn't understand that. Overdrive pedals work fine on SS.

Don't touch the MT2, get an ML2 long before that thing.

I have the SD1, it's pretty good, and the Wylde OD is very similar to it.

If i get an OD and put it over the distortion channel and just roll back my amps gain and boost the gain on the pedal will i get a whole new cup of tea?

I could also get a Marshall Guv'nor or Jackhammer.

Can't you just test the pedal with your amp?

this.

However, most OD pedals might not give enough gain - with a solid state normally you'd want to run them into a clean channel, not as a boost - although boosting can work. Definitely try it with your amp first. Most overdrive pedals tend to give a classic rock tone at maximum gain when run into a clean amp.

I was going to suggest that you try out the marshall jackhammer, then i noticed it's already been mentioned - it is a very hi-gain pedal, with an EQ system pretty much designed with the metaller in mind. I use mine for classic rock tones, though The only downside is it takes a lot of tweaking to get the sound right. It could probably give you enough gain into your clean channel which would be a safer bet considering you have a solid state - running pedals into solid state overdrive channels can give unpredictable results, sometimes they can work great, other times they are absolutely terrible.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

Thanks alot! Helped heaps, so what would happen if i ran it into my dist channel with the gain rolled back on amp and gain up on the pedal? would it boost me into the heavy metal territory? I noticed that the jackhammer has od and dist setting....interesting. I can get one brand new for 99AUD.

Or a Boss SD-1 for 80AUD new.

Or a MXR ZW-44 Zakk Wylde OD 80AUD used.

Well, ZW, designed the OD as a boost for his already cranked amp.

To be br00tally honest (pun intended), you should aim for a new amp, because the OD with a SS amp with gain already turned on is going to be fuzzy and noisy.

If you really want it, get it... but I guarantee that its not going to sound as good as you think it will.
