Well, I have a computer that is full of viruses. Would installing a new operating system rid me of these horrid creatures?

What operating system would you guys suggest? Preferably something that will work on a 3yr old HP Laptop, without making it implode.

Before anyone says anything, I don't look up porn. I can't...Our internet provider has a firewall. So, no I haven't looked at any porn on this computer.

should, reformatting your harddrive will do it also.

but wouldn't you rather just give them all names and keep them as pets? be a lover, not a murderer...

Get your hands on some reboot disk type things that I don't remember what they're called, and wipe the whole computer clean, and restart it all from scratch installing windows or whatever back onto the computer. my moms pro at this stuff and has done it to my computer lots of times. Probably should use a lower versioin of windows. I tried XP on my old laptop, and it just .. well it ****ed up basically

How might one go about doing this?

well, the reformatting/wiping clean/ingesting your hard drive ideas sound good
but if you have important files you want to save, don't just throw them on a flashdrive, clean up your compy and stick them back in, because the files may have viral code in them.
neurghhhh, i guess scan them with an antivirus software, perhaps on a friends computer. That way, if the files are dangerous, your friend gets teh cyber-aids and not you.

If you really need a "new operating system" then get Windows XP Pro.

Ok, honestly, I'm technically retarded. I have no clue what you guys just said. Now, the backing up files I know, but reformatting doesn't ring a bell.

They do have names. Trojan, spyware, keylogger, worm, etc.

reformatting is completely wiping the hard drive of all information. then it is clean and can have an operating system reinstalled on it. I would recommend windows XP Professional. reformatting can be done right from the install disc.

Why not use a decent (i.e. not supplied with PC, nor one of the major brands) virus scanner and nuke the little b******s anyway. Wiping the disk and starting again will get rid but you'll get new ones in a few hours, so why go to the bother? I use Avast! software and its pretty good.
