So with my Christmas and birthday money i am going to but a new bass. I dont have alot of money but i saved up $500. So i was thinking of buying the Squire Vintage 70 Jazz bass. I wanted to know if this was worth the money or if its better to just buy the Fender MIM Jazz bass. I dont realy want to spend all my money but if the squire is realy bad im not going to get it. I read all of the reviews and they both seem to get good ones. But i want some more experienced people to help me. Well thanks in advance.

general opinion tends to sway towards the squire being better than the MIM

The squier is a great bass, as is the fender MiM. Lots of people will say the squier is more worthwhile, however: Honestly, the only way you're going to be able to choose between two these two basses is to play them and decide for yourself. they're made of diffferent woods and will as a result sound different. Also, the quality control on either bass may differ from instrument to instrument, so go to a guitar shop, ask to try a MiM J and a squier VM and if you find a particular instrument you really like (regardless of which model it is), buy it.

Funny old world eh.

Are you looking at the newer MIMs because i would get one of those over a VM, But eh some older MIMs are amazing and some are crap. The Vm seems to hold up generally well, whenever i play one. Personnally i would say get an MIM it will have a better resale value anyway.

The VM Jazz isn't bad at all, seriously consider giving it a try! Also try the Classic Vibe Jazz too because that's made it's name as another quality instrument from Squier.

Have you considered other options, such as an Ibanez or a Rockbass?

Well i considered the ibanez artcore but it doesnt seem to popular. And i have look at rock bass. I just like the fender jazz bass but i dont know if i want to spend all that money because i only have a little more than $500. Thats why i was asking about the squire one.

There Ibanez Soundgear Range are well worth a look, they are very good basses, the sound is a bit different from a Jazz however.

You need to play the MIMs. Some are gems, some are not so. Try a Aerodyne.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

Neck dive, poor higher fret access, and the tone isn't really versatile.

and it is pretty hard to get a T-bird to even be audible with the pure delicacy of it's tone.

unless tone is boosted and the rear pickup is favored greatly, don't even think about anyone liking your tone. they wont even know you're there.
