Is it possible to block f holes temporarily to avoid feedback when playing with high gain? would that work with say cloth or something?

Most people use foam, like the soft plushy stuff you find inside cushions, just get some and stuff into the holes.

the wood would transfer the vibrations sound as well so it would only help that much, and besides that covering them up would defeat the purpose of a hollowbody why would you wanna do that anyways?
