Okay, right now I am not in a band. Just getting better and messing around. I am in an apartment so I am thinking a low watt tube amp.

I have had a spider III 15 watt (my first amp) and it really really sucked. I bought and currently play a crate v18 (its tube and was really really cheap $150). In reality, 18watts is kind of overkill and I really dont get to crank the amp and enjoy it much. The speaker sounds kind of like paper and the tubes are probably crap. I have no idea how to replace either of these. Oh and the reverb sucks massively

I have been toying with the idea of buying epiphone valve jr half stack. These dont leave much room for creativity though, I have a decent set of pedals, (in my sig) that could make up for its lack of features but I would need a good reverb to go along with the valve jr. I have heard great things about modding these but have absolutely no experience with electronic wiring or soldering or any of that.

If I have to, I have heard good things about the s.s. roland cube 30x.

Any suggestions?
upgrade crate? buy epi valve? buy roland cube 30x? something else?
Keep it under under $400 ish

Cheapest thing to do would be to buy tubes from:

www.eurotubes.com

and a speaker from http://www.warehousespeakers.com/

maybe a greenback clone for the speaker?

80 bucks for speaker 70 bucks (or less) for tubes and you are set. Both are pretty easy mods from what i hear and throw an overdrive pedal in front of it (50 bucks) you are looking at a really nice amp.

If I buy tubes one eurotubes for the crate, would I have to bias it myself?

I dont think so if you buy matching tubes, but im no mechanic.

i own the V15 and i love it..im planning on running a Pod in through it, using the tube poweramp as the poweramp for the pod..and like you said..the stock speaker isnt great, thats why i ordered a celestion vintage 30 loudspeaker for it. if its too loud..then get a power attentuator..if you dont like the sound than get a new amp..but a stack isnt gonna be quieter
