Many of you GB&C regulars have heard about this, and up until now it has just been an idea. Well not it's an official competition.

Now, all competitions need rules, and so, to keep judging simple, I'll be putting some strict rules in place.

1) This must be a guitar build. That means you need to make the neck and body yourself.
1a) You do not need to carve the nut.
1b) You do not need to slot the fretboard.
1c) You do not need to fabricate the trussrod.

2) Construction must begin and finish anywhere between January 1st 2009 and January 31st.
2a) This means we need pictures of the guitar in assembled and playable condition by 11:59 PM on January 31st. Late entries will not be counted.
2b) If your finish hasn't cured yet, just be careful while assembling it. Take into account the curing times of finishes while choosing them.

3) Judging will be done by respected members of the GB&C who are not competing. Please ask me if you want to be a judge through my profile.

4) There are no limits on how much money you spend. I hope this will encourage high quality intruments, and it should deter the breaking of rule 1.

I hope people want to do this, I hope you guys have fun, and I really don't mind if no one actually cares. I'm just doing this for kicks late at night. If I'm the only entry. so be it!

Links to individual build threads will be posted below. Post in this thread if you have questions, ideas, or any other comments related to the even itself.

Suggested Judging Criteria

Looks /10
- Easy enough. Based on pictures, you judge what looks the best.
Sound /10
- Yes, we need soundclips for this one. Play through any amp you'd like, but we need to hear it.
Playability /10
- No, we don't need you to mail your guitar to us. We will judge this based on pictures of the frets, neck, action, and hardware.
Cost /10
- Don't lie. Tell us how much you spent. The higher the rating of the other 3, and the lower the cost, the better this score will be. However, if you spend like five grand on a ****e guitar, you will get a low score in this category.

How does Judging work?

Using the suggested criteria, or any criteria you wish to go by, each judge will cast a vote to a respected member of the GB&C, the "grand judge" who will not lie, cheat, or in any other way tamper with results. The "grand judge" will get one vote, just as the other judges. The "grand judge" may not compete in the competition.

Lets say our judges are ficticious people, named John, Jake, Bill, and Christina, with the grand judge being Anthony.

Each of them will cast a vote for which one they think is the best guitar. They do not need to provide a reason, merely a PM to Anthony that says "I think so-and-so's guitar is best".

The grand judge then e-mails me the results. I will post the number of votes, merely 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place results. This will prevent people who got no votes from feeling sad and commiting suicide. If you lose, don't feel bad, you still did a great job.

If anyone see's flaws with this system, let me know. I will not hesitate to correct it.

hey bud, you should think about frakenstrat, and custom categories.

frankenstart= all parts pre made.
custom= ALL parts must be made yourself.

also, is there a spending limit,
i'll be involved, either with a build, or i'll judge

We've had enough frankenstrats with the 100GBP competition. I want to see builds.

And certainly, you would make an excellent judge, but an even better competitor.

OtterEDIT: Carousel, have you started it yet? If so, it won't count.

I don't have time to build one myself, exams and such, but i'd be happy to judge

I wish I could build one but I have no tools to do it with and I wouldn't know how to use them if I did. I will volunteer to be a judge though.

Really I could make a body. I do know how to use most woodworking tools. I wouldn't really know how to make the neck though. I wish I knew someone locally to teach me how it's done.

Please do sir!

Keep this in mind:

If you buy your wood from LP, your hardware from the internet, borrow the tools, and use an oil finish, there is no reason it should cost more than $400.

Then again, I'm going all out on this one... soo haha yeah!

At least you'll make money.

I'm already into this for like $900 according to my plans so far...

So you're in Bobby? Cool man.

You should make your guitar the shape of the batman symbol!

See what I did bobby?

You said good idea, so I edited the above post to include some ridiculous idea.

Through my clever manipulation of the time space continuum, you have agreed to creat a batman guitar.

Oh hells yes.

So here are some specs for my build...

Bolt on 24 fret maple/rosewood neck, tung oiled
Strat shaped sapelle body with washbrun style cutaway scalloping
Recessed TOM string through
1 humbucker, 1 single, still undecided on which ones
2 vol, 2 tone, 3 way switch

All satin chrome hardware, if I can find it
Undecided on finish

With the new tools I need to buy, I'm in debt for years. Luckily, my cousion knowss a cabinet maker .

OK so it won't be $900, but it will be a lot!

Sir, you're in.

I know that building a guitar in one month while still balancing all other aspects of life will be a challenge, but even if you come in a bit late, this is still motivation to at least get the project done, you know?

Anyways, glad to have you onboard, I'll add your name to the list.

I'd Judge. I'm not in any financial situation to have a guitar done by month's end, but I'd gladly stare at pics of guitars for hours

What are the criteria?
------

Shwiggity.
#37
I did, but i didn't see any particular aspects of the guitar that would be judged...

ie: action/playability
finish quality
design (body) uniqueness
hardware placement
etc?
------

Shwiggity.
#38
Oh, like what it will be rated on?

Ok I'll edit the OP to include that.

Haha I dont think other aspects of life will be difficult for me. I'm on school holidays until February and I live in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.
I think the only problems I will have are a few aspects of the build (my first build ever) and soundclips, as I dont have any recording equipment. I could probably just use my camera though.

why not have the grand judge average out the points for each guitar based on what each judge says, then post results for each category so the builders can see what their strong point were?

just an idea but it could tell the builders what their strong and weak points were for each guitar
